ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith refused to backdown on Friday after he came under fire for defending Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cubans comments about bigotry in a recent interview. Despite being labeled an Uncle Tom and a sellout by some in the black community, Smith made it clear that he stands by what he said 100-fold.
Smith went on to argue that what Cuban said is 100 percent correct. The commentator also addressed the elephant in the room, which he said many white people wont talk about out of fear of being labeled racist.
I look at our unemployment rate consistently being double that of folks in white America. I do understand that, to some degree, theres a level of racism that we all have to overcome but that doesnt mean every single issue is race related, he said. Sometimes it is about how you represent yourself, it is about how you present yourself.
He wasnt even close to done:
When I talk about not having a command of the English language, and still you want a job, and you want to have a career, but you dont want to get your education, you dont want to go out there and pound that pavement. Everythings about the sprint, its not about the marathon, its not about you putting forth the necessary effort and due diligence over the long haul to get the thing you need. Thats a reality in our community.
Hey Eric, you’re finally getting some “honest debate about race”
Attaboy Steve, tell it like it is

Absolutely. Open and honest discussions about race are absolutely taboo under the tyranny of political correctness. It’s more risky than being a global warming denier.
Boy...and us hetero folks don’t say boo about the fags ruining our country....the once very best of organizations like the boy scouts, the military...
This guy is just as good as Bo Snerdly and black enough to criticize!
The media pivot to Cubban and race issues is intended to capture the attention of the low information voters and get their minds off of the VA scandal.
The VA scandal had the unique ability to capture the attention of even the Black Democrat voters. The VA scandal cannot be interpreted as a partisan issue. Everyone knows a veteran.
Don’t let the left distract you. The sports racial issue is a non-story.
Bump!
This is a great rant
This is rare for ESPN. If they were smart, they would give him a raise and a bonus check. White Americans are tired of being pounded on while the media ignores the serious issues inside black “culture”.
It is refreshing when blacks stand up and take responsibility. Cosby tried it but was beaten down and towed back to the plantation. Will this man stay strong? Time will tell.
Screamin’ A has said similar things in the past - it’s just that his next opinion or rant will be so outlandish you wonder what is contrived and what is not.
That said, he’s been very consistent on race issues in the past. Good on him.
Open and honest debate from both sides is what is needed to fix the race relations in this country.
A black fried of mine relayed a story about his dad and grandfather sitting on the porch drinking beer and saying about the VA, “Stay away from there. It is the place where you check in but don’t check out”.
Of course he was attempting to defend Bo by saying the problem with the VA is very old.
Yeah, the VA situation resonates with a lot of common people both Democrat and Republican.
“Uncle Tom”... Yeah, that criticism that the left loves to wield has about as much intellectual heft as some idiot defending his own bigotry by saying “Yeah, well, there are WHITE neeegers, too!”.
Every second of Steven A. Smith’s seven minute monologue is worth watching and hearing. I particularly like his contrast between a sprint and a marathon in life, and his personalization of the American Dream. I respect and admire this man.
Bo Snerdly should interview this guy on Rush’s show.
If getting good grades in school and speaking proper English is...horror of horros!...acting like (ewwww!) a hated WHITE person...if your music glorifies a thug culture...if you spend your youth expecting to be a rich rapper or sports star someday...if your spend your time practicing basketball or skateboarding instead of at the library...if you hate whites, have a chip on your shoulder, and blame all your problems on “racism”...well, how good an impression are you going to make on an interviewer? Chances are the white guy up for the same job might come off better. Deal with it, and change your ways.
The first time I visited a VA building (didn’t go inside) I had a bad feeling about the place, but I didn’t know why. I think this problem that has been made public is probably the tip of the iceberg.
Great rant - he should be a black leader not Jackson or sharpton.
Cuban is a 9/11 truther, he funded a film about assassinating Bush. He is extremely leftist on most issues.
And...wasn’t it Jessie Jackson that said “There is nothing more painful to me than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.
