A new season of Perthshire Highland Games opens this weekend with one of the most spectacular events on the annual calendar the Atholl Gathering and Highland Games.
The two-day extravaganza is the first of 14 events that will see tens of thousands of spectators descend on the region over the next four months.
The summer of tradition and sport begins today with the Atholl Highlanders Parade the annual inspection of Europes last remaining private army.

I think I would probably have won the 100 yard dash at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games if they had not held the 220 first.
I had not trained in over a month and had no idea that I had gotten a bit out of shape. I was leading everyone fairly easily when at around 150 yards the bear jumped on my back. I barely made it to the finish line.
They held the 100 only a few minutes later and my legs were like rubber.

Something stirs in me when I hear the pipes...I either want to sit and weep or to grab a sword and go to war. That’s the Scottish in me I guess. :-)

I have been to Blair Atholl. Nice visit just off the A9.

Near as I can tell, my family has one Scottish ancestor back in the 1600s.
Why I dig bagpipe music is quite a puzzle.
Still cool, though. :-)
