There is a massive mudslide in the small town of Collbran, about 50 miles outside of Grand Junction. The Mesa County Sheriff says three people are missing. The mudslide is estimated to be about 4 miles long, 2 miles wide and about 250 feet deep.

Deputies described the area as very unstable and they estimate an entire ridge has been sliding for most of today. A witness told deputies who called into dispatch this evening, described hearing a noise that sounded much like a freight train that is attributed to the slide.

"This slide is unbelievably big," Lt. Phil Stratton, Mesa County Sheriff's Office said.

Wow, sounds like it’s an enormous one. Was it along the main hwy that runs through town? I’ve driven through there a couple of times. It’s beautiful. I always liked it. Prayers up for anyone caught in that thing!

A repeating pattern. Oso, WA. Jackson Hole, WY, Afghanistan, now Grand Junction, CO. All mountainous areas.

Clif High noted the pattern in his web bot data last week on 5/18. He suggested “slinkholes” as a name for the long, deep spreading chasms.

Rain has fallen most of the day and the sheriff's office says that "likely contributed to the cause of the slide"

Ya think? But we're in the middle of a drought. More GoreBull warming or maybe it's just that the only permanent thing about the climate and weather is that it is constantly changing.

The slide is along Salt Creek Road, also known as 601/2 Road, near Vega State Park, east of Collbran, which is about 40 miles east of Grand Junction.
