U.S. FOOD INFLATION RUNNING AT 22%
Breitbart Big Government ^ | 26 May 2014 | by CHRISS W. STREET

Posted on 05/26/2014 12:52:51 PM PDT by kingattax

After five years of the federal government telling the public that despite a $3.5 trillion increase in monetary expansion, the inflation rate is below +2%, the Department of Agriculture (DOA) just warned the American public that the consumer price index for food is up by 10% this year.

The DOA tried to blame food inflation on the drought conditions in California, but last year’s drought was worse and food prices fell by -6%. The real problem is Federal Reserve monetary stimulus is stimulating inflation. I reported in "Food Price Inflation Scares the Fed” two months ago that commodity food costs were exploding on the upside. Given the lag in commodity costs impacting prices on grocery store shelves, annual U.S. food inflation is now running at +22% and rising.

The DOA tried to blame food inflation on this year’s drought conditions in California that they stated may have “large and lasting effects on U.S. fruit, vegetable, dairy and egg prices.” It is true that California droughts are always agricultural issues, since 80% of the state’s freshwater supply is used by farms and ranches.

This has resulted in surface water deliveries to farms and ranches from reservoirs and the California Aqueduct being cut by 32.5%, or 6 million acre-feet.

I once ate rabbit jerky I made myself (starting with a live rabbit).

The last of the jerky I ate after carrying it around wrapped up in a piece of parachute-cloth in the bottom of my sleeping bag for four days.

I would have sold my soul to the devil for more.

I remember when my food budget for the week was $75 and we ate pretty good. Now $75 would buy our groceries for the week only if we ate 0 meat.
I could do it.....heck I could eat out of the dollar store. Hubby refuses though.

It's not "zero-sum theory". It's "zero sum game".

I think what you're trying to claim, despite your confused use of the jargon of game theory, is that the addition of more people grows the metaphorical pie.

In some instances that's true, but I'm not sure it's true for modern food production.

In a world of free land and free water, every additional family might be expected to start a farm and grow their own food. In that case, yes, the pie grows.

But that isn't what happens today. Today most food comes from industrial farms using modern equipment, petroleum derived fertilizer, and strained water resources. How does the addition of the typical illegal immigrant proportionately increase any of these things?

Does every new immigrant bring more water?

Does every new immigrant bring more petroleum for fertilizer?

Does every new immigrant design more efficient farming equipment?

Does every new immigrant genetically modify some plant to be more vigorous and productive?

Probably not.

But suppose the pie does grow for some reason, if it doesn't grow in proportion to population increases, then prices still tend to go up.

The reason food production has grown so much in the USA is because a few clever people found oil, gas, water, and engineered machines, plants, and chemicals.

Unless these immigrants are engineers and scientists, it's likely they're putting an extra burden on food production.

It’s not food inflation, it’s inflation inflation. Food is up, gas is up, healthcare is up. What isn’t up in price. Magazines that used to cost $3 or $4 now cost $5 and $6. A guy I know who runs a grocery store said that they don’t sell ice cream in half gallons anymore, it is sold in one and a half quarts. Classic evidence of inflation. Listen, the Fed has been pumping billions of ‘new’ dollars into the economy for years now. What do people expect is going to happen?

I also have the occasional ‘possum/rabbit/squirrel traipsing through my back yard.

Had a bunch of deer a couple of years ago, but locally “deer ebola” (EHD) has nearly wiped them out.

It’s hard to believe how relatively cheap stuff was within the easy memory of we old timers.

Doesn’t look like you are in the position to explain the difference between “theory,” and “game.” And if you believe that illegal immigrants affect food prices, as opposed to the multitude of economic factors that actually do, then God help you.

“Magazines that used to cost $3 or $4 now cost $5 and $6”

Magazines are in a death spiral. They may be $5.00 at a newsstand, but you can get them 2 years for $12.95, delivered to your door.

“We need more regulation!/s”

We need a law that requires it to rain a certain amount within a range each year, with daily maximums.

We keep track of all spending. Unfortunately we include household cleaning supplies, foil, etc in the food budget. The total cost is up 13%. I believe if we took out everything but food it would be up at least 20%. What a lot of people don’t realize is a lot of packaging is smaller. They probably think their family is eating more.

The rain must never fall ‘til after sundown.

By 8:00 the morning fog must disappear.

They stopped selling tacos 3 for a dollar when people would order two tacos and the clerk’s heads would explode trying to figure out how much to charge.

Absolutely true. In the unlikely event that that a Republican president is ever elected again, there will be saturation coverage of every little problem. The media is totally corrupt and nothing more than a propaganda arm of the DNC.

Then you’ll just have to buy a new Government Motors flex-fuel vehicle.

Better make that two Government Motors flex-fuel vehicles.

That way you’ll have one to drive while the other one’s in the shop for a recall.

From what I’ve heard, ‘possum is NOT good eatin’.

When I was a YoungPossum my grandfather beseeched my grandmother to cook a possum he had killed. She did. He never asked again. Neither did I.
