Nigeria's defense chief is claiming that the country’s military has located nearly 300 schoolgirls abducted by Islamic extremists but cannot go in with force to free them.
Air Marshal Alex Badeh told demonstrators supporting the country's much criticized military on Monday that Nigerian troops can save the girls, according to The Associated Press. But he added, "we can't go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back."

Russian special forces suck at hostage rescue. They are good cut throats that will go in and kill the bad guy (or the good guys given the current regime), but in typical Russian fashion put a low priority on civilian life. The Moscow theater rescue and Beslan are great examples of how you might as well bomb the hostages before calling them in.
I do not want to stereotype Nigerian forces because I do not know much about the country, maybe they are very professional and seasoned combatants. But I suspect some pessimism is warranted.
