China plans to remove six million vehicles that do not meet exhaust emission standards by the end of the year as a way of improving air quality.

More than 300,000 vehicles will be decommissioned in the capital Beijing.

Recent findings from the state's environmental agency showed that 31% of the air pollution in Beijing comes from vehicle exhaust fumes.

smoke n mirrors ... it's their manufacturing industry that they're trying to protect.

"decommissioned" sounds like government cutbacks ... until we'll learn later ... the cars were replaced with more efficient exhausts.

Nothing changes.

Cars and factories are only a part of the problem. China can’t really fix its air pollution crisis until it figures out how to stop 600 million peasants from burning coal every day for heat and cooking. They still need a massive electrical generation program for the rural areas, which is why they are working on thorium reactor technologies while the USA stupidly ignores them.

I can see the United States doing something like this....any care purchased before 2000 must be taken to the dump....following year all 2001....and so on. I think it is just a matter of time. Our poor country is in such a bad way with freedom.

You Cad!

How dare you impugn the green motives of our environmentally conscious Chinese fellow socialists. The Worthy Oriental Gentlemen are doing this for the children!

Next thing you know, you'll be telling me the Japs "retire" hundreds of thousands of cars every year .... or as soon as they hit 20,000 ... for the same capitalist reason.

PS: If you receive this message before your home is inundated by the rising ocean levels caused by Global Warming, serves you and George W. Bush right!

All those coal fired plants with no or minimal pollution controls. Why don’t they do something about those?

Or dumping of heavy metals?

It would kill their economy.

I’m there twice a year - the rural areas are not where the problem is. Some cities it’s like walking through fog all day due to auto and plant emissions. Drive an hour in any direction and it clears up in no time in the countryside.

I do agree that they need a rural interstate and electrical generation program and am a proponent of Thorium use.
