Griffin Furlong lost his mother to leukemia at age 6, and soon after that, lived with his father and older brother in a homeless shelter for two years in Louisville, KY....

A month ago, with finals and AP tests still ahead, he found himself homeless again.

His girlfriend's mother put him up for three weeks, then he moved in with an aunt and uncle.

Through all this, he ended up with a 4.65 GPA and will graduate as valedictorian on June 4.

Good for him. And no mention of being on welfare. I wish the kid well.

Nice young man. Full of character and determination. Loves his family. Works hard. All the things that 0 hates and doesn’t care to understand.

He was homeless from the age 7-9 and then for 1 month at 18. Am I getting this? And this requires a full “homeless” tag?

re: And this requires a full “homeless” tag?

I agree. It doesn’t require the full homeless tag. However, his home situation has definitely been unstable. God bless him for hanging in there with his studies. Its too bad he is not from a favored minority group. If he had been he would get to take his pick of full-ride scholarships.

His mom died from leukemia when he was six. I praise dad for sticking it out.

Especially in America, the Media has distorted and commingled the definitions of ‘class’ and ‘income level’. I have met people from around the world and various and very different cultures and societies. Some of the people that I met were relatively poor but were considered to be very high ‘class’ by their society.
Subject to verification of the story in the OP, good on them, both the kids and their families and mentors.
ps. the ‘6”’ heels in your clever tag line won't work for me.
I will have to go with ‘if I have any money I buy books, if I have any left over, I buy whiskey and ammunition.’.

There has been a happy update to the story. See: http://www.reviewjournal.com/trending/good-news/internet-funds-homeless-valedictorian-s-college-education

Money has been raised online to help finance his college education.
