In the early days of last October’s government shutdown, South Dakota governor Dennis Daugaard, a Republican, wanted to use state and private funds to keep Mount Rushmore open — an offer the Department of the Interior quickly rebuffed, even as its high-ranking staff circulated accounts of the shutdown’s harmful effects on would-be visitors and private-sector park workers.

Evidently the Department of the Interior didn’t want the media to know it had so bluntly turned down the governor’s detailed proposal, which was accompanied by a logistical addendum that outlined how Daugaard would keep Mount Rushmore equipped with security, parking, concessions, gift shops, and lighting.

National Review Online submitted a request for Department of Interior records on October 22. The department ignored the 20-day response deadline established in the Freedom of Information Act and did not provide the public records until late in the afternoon on the Friday before Memorial Day, 113 working days late.

When we finally did receive the documents, they were heavily redacted. For example, here’s National Park Service director Jonathan Jarvis’s response to the South Dakota governor’s proposal:

Better you should ask, "Who owns the citizens?"

(Don't ask the bureaucrats, you already know their answer.)

The bureaucrats think they do--and this has always been the case.

Yep. Any of us who grew up in a “blue” city know this is perhaps THE primary rule of how they operate.

What is sad is that there are so many people in power who willingly follow Obama’s order to inflict maximum pain to the people for political benefit.

If you see what the Tea Party did yesterday in Texas, we here believe we can change things for the better

What possible legal reason could there be for redacted information or named in such a document such as this?? National security or Obama security?

Politics are just the Rules. Power is the Game!

The toady Director of NPS, Jonathan Jarvis, stands out in my mind.

Regarding inflicting pain, those Park Service functionaries who carried out these orders should be shunned. They should find it difficult to live in local communities. Their business should be turned away, don’t sell them food gasoline; don’t intreract with them.

Just imagine the wonderful things a Republican administration can do with the various “powers” the Obama administration has been discovering.

Well I live out here near Mount Rushmore. The Park Service blocked the side of the roads so that tourists could not stop and take pictures. The Governor called DC out and said the monument might be theirs but the road was his. The road reopened.

There is no justification they are just flipping NRO the bird. NRO should take them to court.

But since the Governor already has a copy of the unredacted letter I see no reason why he has not released it.

This past Memorial Day my memory renewed my anger at this ... [insert word] ... Administration with the reminder of them closing the Military Cemeteries overseas in the face of those wishing to honor the sacrifices demonstrated there. Truly a despicable act done with maximum malice towards a segment of the population he obviously despises. Yet, as President, he is at the USMA today to give the graduation address. Unlike the civilian schools, the cadets have no option of attendance.

South Dakota should pass a law and takeover Mt Rushmore, the Feds have proven themselves not to be competent stewards of the landmark.
