School cafeterias have been serving up lunches without political fanfare for generations, but Michelle Obama has upset that applecart. The federal governments new nutritional standards for school lunches championed by the first lady as part of her crusade against sweets and soda are creating headaches for schools, which are losing money on more expensive ingredients as children throw their federally mandated healthy meals away. Mrs. Obama is now embroiled in a war of words with the House GOP, which is attempting to rescue school districts from this financial boondoggle with waivers.
If another federal board has its way, however, the school-lunch cash crunch may look like small potatoes next to a broader set of activist dietary standards. The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, a joint venture of HHS and the USDA, is currently meeting to set the federal governments official nutritional recommendations, which quietly affect how millions of Americans eat. This year, the panel consists entirely of career academics, several of whom have proposed radical ideas that suggest theyre more concerned with fringe environmental causes than with sound food science and common sense.

everything the government touches turns into a disgusting “one-size-fits-all” result—which is the opposite of freedom of choice... these should not be called school lunches... they should be called government lunches... government lunches as with government school is akin to government housing... why in the world anybody would choose that for their families is beyond me... and i especially do not get how conservatives could choose this for their families... freedom loving conservatives...
The problem is that Americans have no business complaining about the sh!t that gets handed to them when they turn over the responsibilities for even their most basic human functions to a government bureaucracy.
That reminds me of a Socialist from the last century handing out stripped uniforms in camps. Not sure if they were one-size fit's all.
Socialism seems to always end in Death because you can't convince all of the masses of the extreme BS connected to their agenda.
Choose Liberty !
Im guessing some of the stuff we had in the cafeteria when I was a kid some fifty plus years ago...was actuall Army....Surplus food.
never did figure out what some of it was supposed to be
well, yeah, but the little ice creams and the wooden spoons were the bomb
Those are FOND Memories!! Maybe 3 flavors Vanilla Chocolate and Strawberry...and FLAT SPOONS
at the time I doubt that there were any artificial flavors or colors involved
haha! i remember if it came with a bun/roll, i was good because at least i could eat that... and the canned peaches or pairs... i didn't mind the food... i would always take a bag lunch on the days they served stuff i didn't like, for the most part...
Ive heard it called Mystery Meat!
yes--it was served scooped over mashed potatoes or rice... i remember at some point--maybe the mid-late 70s, the burgers seemed to be made of a lot of bean sprouts, or some kind of stringy bean... and that was a total turn-off... i could not/would not eat it...
