Sriracha lawsuit dropped; Irwindale tables public nuisance resolution

The Irwindale City Council decided Wednesday to drop a lawsuit against the Sriracha hot sauce factory and table a separate resolution declaring the factory a public nuisance.

The city and the factory began warring late last year, when residents began to complain of a spicy odor that caused headaches, heartburn and watering eyes.

The trial was scheduled to begin this November, and the public nuisance declaration would have eventually authorized city officials to enter the factory and make the changes themselves.

But city officials said Huy Fong Foods Inc. had finally demonstrated a specific written commitment to solving the smell issues. Mayor Mark Breceda, who toured the factory earlier this week, said the conflict should not have been so drawn out.

"We're almost sorry that this has gone on so long," Breceda said. "We're looking forward to being partners for a very long time."

The South Coast Air Quality Management District did not find enough evidence of a harmful smell to justify issuing a violation, and air quality officials say about two-thirds of the complaints they received came from just four households.

The first complaints came from City Councilman Hector Ortiz's son. In February, Huy Fong Foods began to offer daily tours through the factory and asked each participant if they experienced any harmful odors. None did.

Seems like the Irwindale City Council ran up against an honest businessman that wouldn't play their game.

Is it because the owner was thinking about moving the business to Texas ?

I’ll bet he did play their game in the form of payoffs to crooked officials. IMHO

Yes, there was talk about it but he was smart in that he didn’t commit himself.

Undoubtedly Gov. Perry’s showing up and welcoming them to Texas was a political nightmare the Democrats didn’t want.

I have the belief that’s how this all started, he wouldn’t pay and I’m familiar with Irwindale from before it incorporated. I believe the council caved from all the publicity over this.

Well, THAT is how business is conducted in third world banana republics. A little juice here, a little sweetener there. Pretty soon everything is settled. All the bumps are smoothed out. No Problemo.

"We're almost sorry that this has gone on so long," Breceda said.

Wow, you know what THAT means?

It means they intend to GET him some other way --say, facility safety.

There are a million ways. Apparently this does NOT end here.

It’s possible this might have become a wedge issue among Asians, thereby alienating some from the Democratic party. From an identity politics perspective, this had the stink of Hispanics whaling upon Asians. Coupled with black and Hispanic backing for anti-Asian racial quotas at CA’s colleges, this could have split the CA Democratic coalition wide open. Perhaps CA’s Democratic high panjandrums prevailed upon Irwindale’s pols to back off, on pain of endorsements and financial backing for their primary opponents.
