The Irwindale City Council decided Wednesday to drop a lawsuit against the Sriracha hot sauce factory and table a separate resolution declaring the factory a public nuisance.
The city and the factory began warring late last year, when residents began to complain of a spicy odor that caused headaches, heartburn and watering eyes.
The trial was scheduled to begin this November, and the public nuisance declaration would have eventually authorized city officials to enter the factory and make the changes themselves.
But city officials said Huy Fong Foods Inc. had finally demonstrated a specific written commitment to solving the smell issues. Mayor Mark Breceda, who toured the factory earlier this week, said the conflict should not have been so drawn out.
"We're almost sorry that this has gone on so long," Breceda said. "We're looking forward to being partners for a very long time."

The South Coast Air Quality Management District did not find enough evidence of a harmful smell to justify issuing a violation, and air quality officials say about two-thirds of the complaints they received came from just four households.
The first complaints came from City Councilman Hector Ortiz's son. In February, Huy Fong Foods began to offer daily tours through the factory and asked each participant if they experienced any harmful odors. None did.

He had already been doing ops in the neighboring town for THIRTY YEARS, with nary a complaint.
But SOMEHOW after just ONE YEAR of Irwindale ops he racks up FOUR complaints, most of them relatives of City Council people?
Irwindale has just 900 voters and is basically run like a company.

After the publicity from this fiasco I’d guess it will help their sales.
Yep, he was in Rosemead and he was surrounded by thousands and never had a problem but he plain old outgrew his facility.
There is no "public" in Irwindale.
I love Sriracha Sauce.
The man who started the company has a great story of leaving a communist country with nothing but the shirt on his back and making a huge success of his life.
The video of this American entrepreneur is probably what started the complaints.

He says (in so many words) based on his experience, he knows how communism starts.
The name of his company is the name of the ship that carried him to America The FRee.

Irwindale just realized the impact of losing this staple.
The tax base alone would be great!

Yeah, considering the smog and general ugliness in those hellholes, anyone complaining about making Sriracha smells should be laughed out of the county............

Yep, corruption has been a problem in Irwindale from the time of incorporation in the fifties. Not to say all politicians there have been corrupt, but they’ve had more than most towns in the San Gabriel Valley.
It could have been worse. The could be brewing nuoc mam.
I pity the town where that is made.
