Rice Dodges on Deserter Question (Bowe Bergdahl)
The Hill ^ | Sunday, June 1, 2014 | Kevin Cirilli

U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice avoided questions on Sunday about whether Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was released by the Taliban in exchange for five detainees on Saturday, deserted the Army.

ABC News "This Week" host George Stephanopolous asked Rice whether such allegations would be "investigated." "If it is found that he did, will he be disciplined or has he already paid the price?" he asked.

"Certainly, anybody who has been held in those conditions in captivity for five years has paid an extraordinary price, but that is really not the point," Rice said. "The point is he's back. He's going to be safely reunited with his family. He served the United States with honor and distinction."

This is too sordid! We gave up five dangerous sworn enemies of this country for a possible “deserter”?

How many of our soldiers were killed or wounded searching for this deserter?

Obama has just hung a sign on the back of every American abroad saying,” Kidnap Me I’m valuable in trade.” No doubt that Obama’s sympathy is Muslim.

What a non-answer! He willingly walked away from his post in Afghanistan and immediately joined the enemy.

“He served the United States with honor and distinction.”

Not according to people who were there.

Yep, that's what you do when you pay off terrorists.

When Obama reads about this in tomorrow’s paper he is going to be outraged.

Remember, this attack happened a couple days after he deserted:

Attack on U.S. base in eastern Afghanistan kills two soldiers

U.S. military officials say ‘several’ U.S. soldiers also were wounded in the assault on the remote outpost in Paktika province. It’s the same area where an American soldier disappeared on Tuesday.

AQ has already announced that they plan to kidnap Westerners. Guess they got the go sign from the White Hut.

The failure to say “no” is the equivalent of “yes”.

IOW, we traded high level 5 terrorists for one low life deserter.

I didn’t think it was possible for this administration to sink any lower.

This trade was illegal as congress was not consulted and did not authorize it. Again another impeachable offense that will be ignored.

There are worse days ahead.

"The point is he's back. He's going to be safely reunited with his family. He served the United States with honor and distinction."

That's the point because Susan Rice says it's the point? She also said that Benghazi was caused by an anti-Muslim video.

The real point, Susan, is not to look at only one half of the equation. Yes, Bergdahl was released. And, yes, of course his parents are happy. And without even discussing whether he was a patriotic American soldier, there are still major issues with the swap.

First of all, we don't negotiate with terrorists. Now that they see that American hostages can be traded for high-level jihadists, Americans all over the world will be kidnapping targets.

Second--the swap was illegal. Obama violated a law that he signed that promised a 30 day review and evidence of mitigated danger from any Guantanamo releases. He can't pick and choose which laws he will follow (despite the fact that he's done so on myriad occasions, particularly with Obamacare) by claiming exigent circumstances.

And, finally, what about the trade itself? Without sounding like an NFL general manager on draft day, it is necessary to examine what we gave up for what we got. What we gave up were five hard-core terrorist leaders who will, without a doubt, return to their previous life of murder and mayhem, putting innocent Americans as well as innocents of other nations at grave risk. What we got was an American serviceman who left his post under uncertain circumstances, and whose family has posted anti-American Tweets calling for the release of all Guantanamo prisoners.

Going back to football again, this looks like the worst trade since the Vikings gave up multiple players and draft choices for Herschel Walker. Obama was clearly more interested in creating a feel-good photo op with Bergdahl's parents than he was in the strategy of dealing with terrorists, in the legality of the trade, or in the quid pro quo that the Taliban received for the solitary American. As usual, Obama is wrong on all counts.

Maybe the deal was “The Taliban shall cause no embarrassing Saigon embassy helicopter type scenes during the 2016 pullout”.
