Rice Dodges on Deserter Question (Bowe Bergdahl)
The Hill ^ | Sunday, June 1, 2014 | Kevin Cirilli

U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice avoided questions on Sunday about whether Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was released by the Taliban in exchange for five detainees on Saturday, deserted the Army.

ABC News "This Week" host George Stephanopolous asked Rice whether such allegations would be "investigated." "If it is found that he did, will he be disciplined or has he already paid the price?" he asked.

"Certainly, anybody who has been held in those conditions in captivity for five years has paid an extraordinary price, but that is really not the point," Rice said. "The point is he's back. He's going to be safely reunited with his family. He served the United States with honor and distinction."

I don’t think they’ll get much mileage from that for the simple reason that it’s self-evidently a terrible trade. A deserter for five Taliban commanders? Even the low info crowd can see that’s a bum deal. I predict this thing goes away quickly and is never heard about again, except maybe on page D17 six months from now when it comes out that the bit about his failing health was baloney.

Once the terrorist take US citizens as hostages in mass, the Obama prophecy will be revealed, the Obama administration will in every way be analogous to Jimmy Carter’s.

Going back to football again, this looks like the worst trade since the Vikings gave up multiple players and draft choices for Herschel Walker.

Don't be baggin' on a good Republican like Herschel.

He served the United States with honor and distinction.

Rice's specialty seems to be making sweeping statements about matters she could not possibly have full knowledge of, long before we even have half the story.

“He served the United States with honor and distinction.”

Hence the two (2) promotions while he was listed as Missing-Captured, from E-3 to E-5.

Sounds like a setup.

“He served the United States with honor and distinction.”

The guy went AWOL and at least 6 people got killed out looking for him. We should have left him to the Taliban.

Agreed. Obama has a whole raft of controversial things he can do when he gets in trouble and has to get stories like the VA out of.the headlines.

When even the mamsy pamsy UN is outraged because the five we set free to turn around to harm us again are such horrible terrorists, you know there was more to this deal than meets the eye. They know hussein will give them anything they want so they’ll raise the stakes next time. 5 this time, 25 next time. The time after that, they’ll be wanting to sleep in the WH and govern us... never mind, they are already.

I'll give them one week to become unhappy with what he's turned into.

Today's parental TV press-statement gig was embarrassing, bereft of any content.....and hokey. Forty-five minutes of fluff and set-up for the future book and TV appearances by mom and dad until the son returns home and learns English again. Then the threesome will hit the creamed-chicken circuit and clean up. Wait and see.....the father is subdued and 'umble today, but tomorrow watch his liberalism flow like the sands in a godforsaken mideast desert.

My gut tells me that the father is a composite of every smug, touchy-feely, emotional, glib, wordy, girly, dedicated liberal I've ever met in my years of political activity and activism.

Even the untrimmed Muslim beard doesn't bolster or enhance his persona one bit.

I finally turned the duo off. I just can't picture a conservative Army dad taking the podium and deliver the mealy-mouthed, rambling, time-wasting message he delivered today.

The fact that there really was no message at all touching at least a hint of patriotism, American exceptionalism or the buddies in the son's unit overseas, etc. tells me a lot.

I know I would have gotten in, at the least, a thinly-disguised barb at Barak who had FIVE years to spring the son from his prison. but seemingly never even tried.

But this dad will end up being Obama's shill and willing pawn for the next two-and-a-half years. You can bank on it.
