Obama to impose carbon pollution cap on power plants

In his most sweeping effort to date to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, the Obama administration will unveil a new rule from the Environmental Protection Agency on Monday limiting the amount of carbon pollution from coal power plants.

The rule will impose a cap on the level of emissions existing power plants are permitted and it will provide each state a flexible series of options to implement that cap. Among other options, power plants will be allowed to increase the energy they derive from renewable sources like wind and solar power, adopt new technology to increase energy efficiency, and join or create a statewide cap-and-trade system to effectively tax the excess carbon emissions.

The total effect of those options could cut the amount of carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants by up to 20 percent.

President Obama explained the importance of the new rules in his weekly address on Saturday.

"Today, about 40 percent of America's carbon pollution comes from power plants. But right now, there are no national limits to the amount of carbon pollution that existing plants can pump into the air we breathe -- none," he said. "We limit the amount of toxic chemicals like mercury, sulfur, and arsenic that power plants put in our air and water. But they can dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air. It's not smart, it's not safe, and it doesn't make sense."

"That's why, a year ago, I directed the Environmental Protection Agency to build on the efforts of many states, cities, and companies, and come up with commonsense guidelines for reducing dangerous carbon pollution from our power plants," the president continued. "This week, we're unveiling these proposed guidelines,

And when the utilities are unable to provide enough electricity without the coal plants, they will be demonized for it, the better to have the Feds completely take over the whole system. Look for the RATS to start talking about the need for a “single provider system” for electricity.

Particulates are not that great. CO2 is good.

There is no such thing as carbon pollution.

Thank you for pointing out such a cogent point...

So according to liberals I am sucking in pollution every time I breath...

The new rules he previewed on Saturday are only a draft, and they're not expected to be finalized for at least another year.

There, fixed it.

How come the executive branch doesn’t have to take the economic impact into account when they do stuff (polite word) like this? Are they exempt from NEPA?

No, CO2 is harmful, but not at a fraction of one percent like you find outdoors. It takes far higher concentration to really cause immediate harm.

It’s usually the limiting factor in photosynthesis.

But what about Fukushima? But still, I get your point. That’s pretty much what France did out of their lack of coal and desire for attacking CO2 EMISSIONS. They turned overwhelmingly nuclear as their source of electricity. Which leads me to wonder if they ever had a serious accident.

In fairness, their hands are tied because the senate is controlled by the democrats. And they will never allow him to be impeached no matter what he does. Impeaching him now would be a huge waste of time, money, and political capitol.

Bullsh!t. Pure LIES. Yes, Obama, YOU LIE!

It is true that “carbon” is not limited per se, but CO2, CO, and Opacity (soot) is very strictly monitored and limited by permit.

I used to work with CEMS (Continuous Emissions Monitoring System) in coal-fired power plants. The regulations are so strict that they are almost impossible to adhere to them all, but every power plant does, no matter what it costs.

Yep. Think of aborting the planet...

And when Obama gets kicked out of Government housing in 2016 the new Conservative President can undo all the UNCONSTITUTIONAL damage Zero/Reid/Pelosi/Boehner have done to our Freedoms and Liberty. Through Executive order! Then cut the EPA with a Syche like a weed in the garden. And you Democrats can kiss our collectives because what comes around GOES AROUND!

Might as well believe in flying unicorns that poop skittles.

The GOP leadership HAS ALREADY told the Democrats that they are going to revert all the dictatorial rules BACK to the way they were before so that the Democrats 'have some fairness'.

Here, I will let Mitch McConnell explain for you:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Thursday that if he were to emerge as majority leader following this fall’s elections, he’d prefer to keep in place the minority party’s ability to filibuster legislation…

And then the Tea Party favorite Rand Paul:

REPUBLICANS SAY THEY'D RESTORE FILIBUSTER IF IN POWER

So understand that the GOP IS NOT going to stick it to Democrats and use Executive Authority or dictatorial power to get us back to where we should be Constitutionally.

They LIKE what Obama and the MarxoFascists have done - and they are going to protect them and aid their agenda to empower the government and destroy the republic.

So now we know why the shares of two major coal companies fell so sharply on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday, registering new lows for the year.

And we also know how foolish it was for coal miners and their unions to support Barack Obama in his two presidential elections.

If ‘’carbon pollution’’ was one-tenth as harmful as the environmentalists claim, coal miners would be dead after working only a few years. Instead, they live and flourish long enough to expect to be awarded hefty union-secured pensions, which they will no longer be able to receive once Obama’s law destroys the coal companies and their pension funds.
