"His loyalty can be embarrassing even for the Kremlin. At the last elections, President Vladimir Putin and his ruling United Russia party won more than 99 percent of Chechnya's vote, with Soviet-style turnout over 99 percent.
Grozny's central thoroughfare is now named after Putin.
"What's happening here is absurd. It's George Orwell, 1984," said a dissident who asked that his identity not be revealed. "Nothing is going to change here any time soon. Chechen spring? Forget about it."

Putin puppet Kadyrov today saying that he will send 74K Chechens to Kiev to restore order.
Putinistas of an Orthodox bent will have trouble explaining that one.
Just phone in the votes. Simple really.
So like the theater and school massacre meant nothing to Putin. Typical. Sez like yeah right, we’ll go after them.
It’s deeper and more disturbing then that. There are dissidents who allege that Putin has his hands in Islamic terrorism in the Russian Federation, sometimes even committed by the FSB itself, allegedly to get political capital to pass harsher laws and get more control.
We get accused of the same thing for 9/11, a conspiracy theory conveniently put forward by... Russian media itself and Russian friendly folks like Alex Jones.
I have a sinking suspicion that everything we are accused of doing, they are, in fact, doing themselves. Litvinenko, the fellow poisoned with Polonium 210 (used in nuclear weapons), had even claimed that Russia was involved in 9/11. Al-Qaeda’s number two was allegedly trained by the FSB.
When I didn’t see or hear anything happening after those atrocities I knew Putin was gaming it. He looks tuff but he’s a coward IMHO.
