Mixed reaction to Bergdahl’s recovery by service members who consider him a deserter
The Washington Post ^ | June 1, 2014 | Dan Lamothe and Kevin Sieff

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s recovery after five years in captivity has rekindled anger among some of his military peers over how he came to fall into enemy hands and the price the United States has paid to get him back.

Bergdahl, 28, is believed to have slipped away from his platoon’s small outpost in Afghanistan’s Paktika province on June 30, 2009, after growing disillusioned with the U.S. military’s war effort. He was captured shortly afterward by enemy forces and held captive in Pakistan by insurgents affiliated with the Taliban. At the time, an entire U.S. military division and thousands of Afghan soldiers and police officers devoted weeks to searching for him, and some soldiers resented risking their lives for someone they considered a deserter.

Bergdahl was recovered Saturday by a U.S. Special Operations team in Afghanistan after weeks of intense negotiations in which U.S. officials, working through the government of Qatar, negotiated a prisoner swap with the Taliban. In exchange for his release, the United States agreed to free five Taliban commanders from the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba...

The Obama Foreign Policy Doctrine in five steps:

1. Negotiate with terrorists.
2. Ignore Congressional legal mandates.
3. Exchange ONE disgraced US solider for five most prized Taliban killers (who have vowed to return to the battle field.)
4. Pronounce himself World Savior.
5. Repeat.

Well Jake Tapper’s article for CNN is brutally frank. I have to give him credit.

I can’t wait for Rush and Alex and Levin tomorrow. It should be pretty interesting. Allen West is not giving Bergdahl any slack on his website.

Everything Obama touches stinks. He truly has a “reverse Midas” touch.

All Zero has to do now is appoint Bergdhal to head the VA or the CIA.

Thanks for that tip. I just read Tapper's article, and it's brutal. Apparently, Tapper isn't going to be a sycophant for Obama, even after moving to CNN. I wonder how long they will allow it.

But, I'm surprised to see this in the Washington Post. I guess they thought they couldn't ignore it, with the Facebook and Twitter comments going viral.

I did get one useful piece of info: the original source of the information about Bergdahl's desertion and the consequences that was posted here (and elsewhere): a comment on the Rolling Stone article.

This really needs an investigation. I'll suggest that the Republicans promise they will pursue this after the election, in a joint House/Senate committee. Of course, that will require the Republicans to take control of the Senate (hint, hint).

I wonder how long he will last at CNN. They haven't seemed to be too interested in the facts for the past 6 years or so.
