Fellow Soldiers Call Bowe Bergdahl a Deserter, Not a Hero
CNN ^ | Sunday, June 1, 2014 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 06/01/2014 8:06:58 PM PDT by kristinn

The sense of pride expressed by officials of the Obama administration at the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is not shared by many of those who served with him -- veterans and soldiers who call him a deserter whose "selfish act" ended up costing the lives of better men.

"I was pissed off then and I am even more so now with everything going on," said former Sergeant Matt Vierkant, a member of Bergdahl's platoon when he went missing on June 30, 2009. "Bowe Bergdahl deserted during a time of war and his fellow Americans lost their lives searching for him."

Vierkant said Bergdahl needs to not only acknowledge his actions publicly but face a military trial for desertion under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

A reporter asked Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel Sunday whether Bergdahl had left his post without permission or deserted -- and, if so, whether he would be punished. Hagel didn't answer directly. "Our first priority is assuring his well-being and his health and getting him reunited with his family," he said. "Other circumstances that may develop and questions, those will be dealt with later."

Following his release from five years of captivity in Afghanistan on Saturday, Bergdahl was transferred to a military hospital in Germany.

SNIP

On August 18, 2009, Staff Sgt. Clayton Bowen and Pfc. Morris Walker were killed by an IED in the search for Bergdahl. Staff Sgt. Kurt Curtiss was killed on August 26; 2nd Lt. Darryn Andrews and Pfc. Matthew Michael Martinek were killed after being attacked in Yahya Khail District on September 4; Staff Sgt. Michael Murphrey was killed September 5 by an IED at the Forward Operating Base, Sharana.

It was interesting that Taliban Daddy was very specific about people sent to Germany when al-Bergdal is being physically checked out. Sounds like Papa sent a bunch of ACLU lawyer types.

Very good article Kristinn, thank you for sharing it.

I’m so sickened that 5 major terrorism figures were released for this loser that I can barely see straight anymore.

I don’t believe any of them will live in Qatar for a year as specified and even if they did, that doesn’t mean they aren’t involved in terrorist activities.

As for Bergdahl, I really don’t care what happened to him. He walked away so whatever he got, he deserved. I doubt he’ll be tried for desertion because of the loser in chief we have.

I am so outraged over this, I am at a loss of words to express it. The ONLY scenario that I can come up with on this is that Obama took personal offense because Karzai did not come to meet him at Baghram, so he released some prisoners from Gitmo that would make Karzai’s life hell. Yes, he really is that petty.

His fellow men in uniform had to sign nondisclosure agreements, per the article! Is this normal for situations like this?

Has Bergdahl’s father expressed any regrets about the heroes killed in search of son? Or has the father limited his concern to the well-being and freedom of the terrorists at Gitmo?

Listen to the news conference again. The family sent people to Germany and Papa told the son to LISTEN to them.

Brutally frank article.

Article by Jake Tapper. So much for the Obama's administration claim of "transparency" in its affairs:

Many of Bergdahl's fellow troops ... told CNN that they signed nondisclosure agreements agreeing to never share any information about Bergdahl's disappearance and the efforts to recapture him. Some were willing to dismiss that document in hopes that the truth would come out about a soldier who they now fear is being hailed as a hero, while the men who lost their lives looking for him are ignored.

Hagel says:

“Other circumstances that may develop and questions, those will be dealt with later.”

How typical of this administration. Everything “will be dealt with later”.
