You would think a state with such dire financial problems couldnt even consider spending such a large sum of tax dollars on something thats usually built with private money.
Luckily, the Illinois House has backed off the idea for the moment. USA Today reported
Illinois shelving $100M gift to Obama library
A plan to offer $100 million in tax dollars to lure Barack Obamas presidential library to Illinois is on the shelf, with lawmakers prepared to wrap up their spring session without advancing the idea.
Democrats in the presidents home state pushed the proposal to compete against rival bids from Hawaii and New York. But it faced opposition from Republicans wary of an expensive and precedent-setting gift with no immediately identified funding source for a mostly private endeavor when the state faces serious financial difficulties.
Not all Democrats were on board either, and the Illinois House adjourned Friday without calling for any final votes on the measure.
It wasnt clear that a state monetary incentive was necessary for a successful (library) proposal, said Rikeesha Phelon, a spokeswoman for Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat.
Sponsors of the measure vowed to continue their advocacy, but the initiative now must wait despite a June 16 deadline for host proposals to Obamas library commission.
Back in April, Mike Flynn of Breitbart made an excellent point on this subject
Illinois currently has the lowest bond rating of any state. Its unfunded pension liabilities are over $100 billion and it has over $6 billion in unpaid bills. While the legislature considers spending $100 million for an Obama library, it is also considering a measure to permanently increase income taxes. Madigan also backed a ballot initiative to institute a millionaire tax, although that proposal was ultimately withdrawn.
Obama and his party are well known for repeatedly asking their supporters for donations.
Perhaps they could step up and fund this project rather than the already heavily burdened tax payers of Illinois.
Do not be surprised if it is a broom closet.
Please see post 2. Thank-you!
im going to send a suggestion to the illinois legislature that they buy this portable toilet as the queer-in-chief's perfect library. total cost $ 859.00
Of course it will be a broom closet. That way SIEU will be in charge of it, and get all the money.
more spending of monies that Illinois does not have- 35 million for school in mike madigan’s home district.
what they going to have gold toilets/sarcasm
Cook County Jail could do with a new library...
Ironic dedicating a library to someone who can barely read.
I was thinking more along the lines of a high way rest stop and the bathrooms have glory holes.
That would bring back memories for old Barak.
Interesting how Penny Priztker and friends can come up with tens of millions to buy property for the Obamas in Hawaii...but leave the library to the taxpayers.
No wait,,they’re Dems. Ah! NOW it makes sense!
Shouldn’t his library be in his home state (Kenya?) rather than in illinois?
Damn, ya beat me to it...Kenya should be the home of the library.
I thought Presidential Libraries are donations from the public and not tax money. Did Texas pay for Bush jr’s Library? Did Arkansas pay for Clinton’s library? Did California pay for Reagan’s library? I have always heard it is paid by private donors. Why the change suddenly?
It’s possible that O’bamba doesn’t know how to get money except through having
it confiscated by the government from the people.
The only private donor he has is Soros, who is a greedy [unladylike word] as well.
He has no intellectual curiosity at all. All his opinions and deeply held convictions are simply mimicking those of his mother, Frank Davis, Jeremiah Wright, Valerie Jarrett, and the faculty lounge. It is a waste of time to prepare briefing papers for him. Unless someone speaks it to him, he doesn’t learn. He can barely read the words on the teleprompter, and when he’s done he doesn’t remember what he said.
