Certainly after the deserter returns to his Idaho home, he will enjoy the accolades for a time, and then one day he will disappear only to surface in Afghanistan ot Pakistan having returned to his comrades.He obviously enjoyed his adventure.

Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, Savage, etc., had better pick up on this opportunity. Exchanging a deserter for five terrorists is as scandalous as Benghazi, as several American soldiers lost their lives trying to rescue Bergdahl. Michelle Malkin has already posted about this matter.

No way was he only an E-1. You make E-2 automatically upon completion of basic/AIT, before assignment to a unit. If he had some time in the unit before it went overseas, that would have been how he got to PFC (E-3) before going out to find himself, i.e. deserting. The other advancements in rank came from the operation of time, as you say. With the classification as POW, that was SOP and has been since at least WW2.

Donald Trump was talking about this today on “Fox & Friends.” Jake Tapper was discussing the claims that Bergdahl is a deserter on CNN...so it isn’t being confined to FNC (like most stories that put Obama in a bad light). We’ll have to see how the networks treat the story this evening...can they gush about the “hero” and ignore the allegations?
