The purpose of the trip is multi fold but outing the CIA dude was at the top of the list. He knew too much and likely he and his family are prisoners in their own country.

Apparently the for these Taliban leaders (not Burgdahl) was stalled for years. The outed CIA operative cannot be called to testify before Congress nor can he talk to the media. Burgdahl serves another purpose, and that is/was to counter the negative PR snowballing political casualties (Shinseki, Petzel, Carney,etc.) during VA scandal (not to mention all the veterans deaths resulting from the death panel lists).
