The Democratic Deficit: Europeans Vote, Merkel Decides
Der Spiegel ^ | June 02, 2014 – 05:44 PM | (Spiegel staff)

Before the European Parliament election last month, voters were told the poll would also determine the next Commission president. In a silent putsch against the electorate, Angela Merkel is now impeding the process. She fears a loss of power and Britain’s EU exit. […]

… Merkel had hardly begun her speech last Friday before she got right to the point. With her hands set on the podium in front of her in the Regensburg University auditorium, she said: “I am engaging in all discussions in the spirit that Jean-Claude Juncker should become president of the European Commission.” German news agency DPA immediately sent out a headline reading: “Merkel: Juncker To Be EU Commission President.”

And yet, if that is what she really wanted, it’s a goal she could have achieved as early as last Tuesday. Instead, she opted against it. One can, of course, choose to believe the words Merkel delivered last Friday in Regensburg. Or one can focus more on her actions. Thus far, her actions have spoken a different language. It is the language of one for whom the voters are secondary. …

And a guy who said in a public forum “When it gets serious, you have to lie” wants the top job there.

The EU is a dead man walking in my opinion.

The US has worked in the past because markets and industries were local, education was local, state laws and constitutions were local.

Some states have high taxes and high costs of living, others have lower taxes and lower costs of living, which meant that you could choose where to live accordingly, climate and other considerations not withstanding.

The EU doesn’t work well. The US under Boko Haram Barack Hussein Obama doesn’t work well either.

We are screwed until his term expires. We may well be screwed no matter what. The second in line for the highest increase in the deficit after Hussein is George Bush.

It would seem that no matter who is president or who controls congress we are screwed.

The EU was never intended to work well. It was always about power grabs.

I have been in positions of “power” and I have made good money doing it. But it never enticed me, it never corrupted my mind. I think I stayed the same.

Here’s me:

Leave me alone. I’ll leave you alone. Do what you like, don’t ask for my endorsement. Don’t criticize my beliefs unless you are willing to accept my critique of yours. We can talk, but you can’t tell me to shut up because you lack an argument or a response.

It’s called freedom. I am in shock every day that so many so-called Americans want to shut people up.

Power grabs. Yeah, that’s what it looks like to me too.

Last week, UKIP and the other anti-European parties had to run against faceless bureaucrats in Brussels, yet they did a wonderful job of it.

Now, the face of those bureaucrats’ enabler and indispensable supporter has emerged into the public eye — Angela Merkel; so now every non-German European will have a better chance of understanding why their countries’ economies have been so pathetic.

Every country serious about growing its economy must have its own currency, its own national bank to set its own interest rates, and its own printing presses to increase the amount of its currency when necessary.

Japan would have been in a permanent depression for decades if it hadn’t been able to depreciate the Yen against the dollar so that its automobiles could be sold at relatively low prices here. The U.S. would have been in a depression for years if the Fed hadn’t been able to print billions of dollars to prop up our banks.

The French need to resurrect the franc; the Italians the lira; and the Greeks the drachma. It’s not Angela Merkel’s fault that Germany bestrides Europe like a colossus; it’s the fault of the French, Italians, etc., for not understanding that the Euro benefits Germany at their expense.

How can French and Italian automakers sell their good but not exceptional cars around the world if they have to sell them at prices comparable to those of German BMWs and Mercedeses because their countries have the same currency as Germany?
