Seattle to enact $15 minimum wage
Washington Post ^ | June 2, 2014 | Reid Wilson

Posted on 06/02/2014 5:18:57 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

The Seattle City Council voted unanimously Monday to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, equaling the highest minimum wage in the nation.

The law will phase in the higher wages over a three- to seven-year window, depending on the size of a company. Corporations that employ more than 500 workers will have to pay $15 an hour by 2017 if their employees don’t receive company-paid health care. Smaller businesses can wait until 2019 to reach the higher rate. All workers will receive the highest wage by 2021.

“The people who work for a living have basically seen no increase in their incomes since the 1970s,” Mayor Ed Murray said in an interview. “With the federal government fairly stuck, and as we see states more and more adopting that same dysfunction, cities are the place to lead right now.”

Murray spent his first four months in office hammering out an agreement to raise the wage through a task force that included labor, business and nonprofit representatives. Labor groups had threatened to put a wage hike on the ballot this year if the city didn’t increase the wage on its own.

Why stop at a free “basic” income? That’s such a puny concept! Instead, let’s make everyone RICH by giving a trillion dollar coin to every adult in the U.S. Then we’d all be rich! And no one would ever have to work again! Since we’d ALL be RICH!

Myself? The first thing I would buy is a pony. And a jet airplane. Oh, and then I would buy the Mona Lisa. And the Broncos. Gosh, I just LOVE being RICH! And not having to work!

BTW, the trillion dollar coins could be made from a base metal like nickle, so they would be cheap to make, and a few extra ones could be minted for the government itself, so taxes could be completely eliminated and yet government could still perfectly function and be debt free to boot! It’s such an elegant solution I don’t know why it hasn’t been implemented yet!

It is in this case because as soon as they admit that an amount is too much you have them.

Once hyperinflation kicks in $15 an hour will be pennies.

I guess they never heard the Term “Merit Based Pay”.

The more you contribute to the Company’s bottom line, the more the Company Compensates you.

I started my Working Career as a Midnight Shift Mail Clerk. I ended my Career with the same Company as a Regional Vice President. I worked my Butt off and worked my way up.

The idea that the Liberals think that a Midnight Shift Mail Clerk will always be a Midnight Shift Mail Clerk is an insult to hard working people everywhere.

If you choose to stay in a Job with no real responsibility, the Salary you receive would remain commiserate to your Contribution to the Company’s success. Artificially inflating Compensation will result in less Midnight Shift Mail Clerks, period.

‘Stingy bastards. I would have made the minimum wage $100/hr.’

AND that is exactly how the Republicans should be handling this problem. They should force a bill through the House for a minimum wage of $75HR. Let Harry Reid NOT pass it. Any time the minimum wage is brought up: ‘We tried to raise the wage to $75HR. They hate all workers!” Sometimes you have to fought the absurd with the absurd.

A hotel at SEATAC (town surrounding airport) closed eight rooms so they didn’t have to pay the $15/hr. (hotels with more than a certain amount of room would have to pay). How many other businesses will find a way round that? Plus, people won’t be tipping at restaurants who had to raise prices - saying of course people would go there anymore. Socialists think that businesses are welfare organizations.

Another Peoples Republic of Seattle marxist.

Hope businesses flee like deer before a forest fire.

There is plenty of room in Texas for them.

Watch for unemployment to increase and prices go up. I pity the poor fools who believe that this will be a great windfall for the unskilled minimum wage workers.

Seattle is a great place. Loved it - too bad it’s so liberal. Most people there are well off. I don’t think too many people make the minimum wage anyway and by 2021, $15.00 could be the national minimum wage anyway. I think it will happen.
