Never talk to the cops, but know this:

If they get you to tell your story, and then later they ask you to re-tell it DO NOT COMPLY.

If your first and second story differ by so little as one scintilla they will claim you CHANGED YOUR STORY and that’s that.

Just don’t talk to them in the first place.

I have seen law enforcement say they knew a person was guilty, because their story didn’t change at all, and in innocent people it will a always change a little. I have seen law enforcement say they knew a person was guilty because their story changed. So, you are guilty either way.

In this case, at least according to the cops, he did change his story substantially. At first he says he only grabbed the guy around the waist, resulting in their both falling and that’s how he broke a finger.

However when confronted with video evidence that shows only one guy, the victim, falling and hitting his head that’s when the pastor admitted to decking him.

However, it’s likely that, if witness statements are accurate, he will only have to face trial on something lesser.
