Bilingual education idiocy in California
NY Post ^ | 06/06/2014 | LINDA CHAVEZ

---snip--- In 1998, after decades of failing such students, Californians voted to replace so-called bilingual education, which in practice taught children primarily in their native language, with English immersion programs. By all measures, the shift was a success. Not only did kids learn English more quickly, but their reading scores improved, as well, doubling in the first four years after bilingual-ed was banned. So why are California legislators now trying to reverse course and lift the ban?

Why do they want to change this program? Because they want more Spanish only speakers; they don’t want immigrants to learn English??? Don’t know why there would be changes needed? If the program works, and we all agree that learning English is a goal for those born in other countries, why change it?

Ummmmm ... just guessin' here, but ... maybe some of the electorate are beginning to become literate.

Now that I'm a seasoned citizen, and having been born in '48 .. just in time to REALLY enjoy the '60's .. I can imagine the enemy (who WAS in existence then .. I just didn't realize it, nor to what extent at that time) was apoplectic about all us middle class, educated white kids stickin' it to the man and the man's daughters.

They HAD to kill us off ... thus ... Viet Nam (a 'war' that never had a purpose, direction nor military intelligence behind tactics and mission) ... just genocide

That has ALWAYS been my opinion

If you want to teach kids how to speak English, read about LBJ's tenure as a teacher in Cotulla. TX. Johnson knew how to do it and did it well.
Or if you want a fictionalized account, read how Goro Sakagawa - a Japanese immigrant in Hawaii - taught his children to speak English; the account can be found in the “From the Inland Sea” section of James A Michener’s novel HAWAII.

I know you are kidding but even if that were the case liberals will always find an issue to keep stirring the pot.
The liberal mind is never satisfied.

Just a guess—when kids learn English, opportunities are opened to them. They can escape from being in a permanent underclass. That is a threat to totalitarian leftists who want as many people as possible to be mired in poverty, so that the leftists can amass power through false promises of a better life.

The young human brain is specifically wired to pick up new languages quickly and easily. That,as they say,is “settled science”.Bilingual education is,and always has been, nothing more than a full employment plan for teachers’ unions nationwide.

My grandson was in 1st grade at a school in Oregon that mandatorily taught half the day in English and half the day in Spanish. (he didn’t stay there long, fortunately; poor kid cried everyday)

I asked his teacher why she thought this was a good idea, her reply? “It gave her a job.”

That was exactly the response from the Mexican-American parents when asked why they voted to end bilingual education years ago: “We want our children to have better jobs than we have”. It was widely agreed at the time (and this is evident here in NJ now) that “bilingual education” produces students who speak both English and Spanish poorly.

“why not simply make spanglish the official language and be done with it???”

Because the bilingual education scam lets you put twice as many unionized teachers on the dole I mean payroll...

Learn English and become an American the right way by taking the test and leaning about America!

This is crazy. I have a niece who teaches there, and she said scores took off after they started all-English. BTW, guess who was most opposed to the bilingual nonsense? Spanish speaking parents.

They wanted their kids to learn English and get ahead in the US, not be trapped in the immigrant (Dem) ghetto.

“but of course... what WAS i thinking???”

Every white person that votes Democrat/supports liberals is financially benefiting from it; they either receive welfare, workfare, or have sexual relations with someone who does.

Lessons learned from living in NJ...

Obama and the federal government want to erase the border with mexico. Any law, rule, or regulation that may impede that process has been systematically ignored, ruled unconstitutional, or deliberately eliminated. California, along with most of the southwest and Texas, will be defacto mexican territory by the end of the decade. That's what happens when tyrants in washington collude with tyrants in mexico city.

It’s not idiocy, it’s STRATEGY. The Democrats know that if they can prevent Hispanics from learning English (or at least from learning it well), they will ALWAYS be a dependent class...as they cannot fully assimilate, and that means large majorities voting for the handouts. And don’t be fooled, “Bilingual” is the code word for Spanish-only instruction.

But Hispanics that learn English well in this country also do very well. In fact they tend to have no need for “Hispanic Leaders” as they are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves.

This is different than with blacks. Blacks will always have their skin color and will always look at themselves as different, and as needing people to fight for them, even when they do succeed.

So the bottom line is that Democrats have the black vote pretty much locked-down, but Hispanics will drift off the plantation once they learn English. The DEMOCRATS understand this and that is why they’re doing all they can to prevent that from happening.

It’s that simple...again, it’s STRATEGY, not idiocy.

For generations kids from all over the world were taken by their parents to the nearest school——and just left there.

They learned English through immersion-—no pampering.

I taught 1st grade in the 50s and saw it first hand. It was amazing to me how quickly the kids became bi-lingual.They beacame translators for their parents.
