One year later, where are players in George Zimmerman trial?

A year ago Tuesday the first of several hundred Seminole County residents were summoned to the Sanford courthouse for jury selection.

A half-dozen of them ultimately would decide whether former Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman was a murderer or someone who killed an unarmed black 17-year-old in self-defense.

Five weeks later, on July 13, the all-woman jury acquitted Zimmerman of second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin.

The trial was a top news story across the nation, making household names of attorneys, witnesses and other key players.

What has become of George Zimmerman and other key figures in the case since the trial?

Some have gone on to bigger things. Some have struggled. Others went back to their day-to-day lives.

George Zimmerman

Life after the acquittal has been turbulent for Zimmerman, who's now 30. He moves among the homes of people who let him sleep on the couch, said his brother, Robert Zimmerman Jr. He's jobless and has been arrested once, accused of threatening his girlfriend with a gun, and put in handcuffs another time, accused of punching his father-in-law.

In both cases, authorities filed no criminal charges.

He left his wife, Shellie, a month after the trial and is in the midst of a divorce. He owes defense attorneys Mark O'Mara and Don West $2.5 million. He has sold paintings on eBay and toyed with but rejected the idea of taking part in a pay-per-view boxing match with rap artist DMX.

In a Spanish-language interview in February, Zimmerman told Univision that he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder....

"They may be saving federal charges for when something really earth-shattering happens and they need to divert attention back to Zimmermann, who is not popular."

Spot on.

I'll bet there's a shelf in the West Wing labeled "Look, a squirrel!", with attention diverters ready to use.

Unfortunately for them, the one on the top of the stack after the Shinseki resignation was named "Bergdahl".

<>Why has GZ not gone after the media who lied outright about him?<>

Because of this in the article re: Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson

“She has not commented publicly about the Zimmerman trial and is overseeing his defamation case against NBC Universal Media LLC....

“Nelson will preside over a hearing next week on NBC’s request to dismiss the suit.”

Thanks for the ping — Let’s see what she does.

It’s possible the media learned from their experience in defaming Richard Jewell as to how far they can defame a man, but not too far that he can collect damages.

Great, George Zimmerman is a broke and broken man 2.5 mil in debt and Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin are sitting pretty as professional victims.

But he is alive, and that wasn't a sure thing that night that he was being beaten to death.

She seems to be the only one who is bettering herself out of the entire crowd. Good for her!

You better be hawking them because we have wherehouses full of them — and I do mean “wherehouses” because we don’t know where they all are.

There is no legal basis for federal civil rights charges.

I was going to introduce a line of George Zimmerman hoodies, but when we tested them, whoever put them on suffered a 30-point loss in IQ and a propensity to do really dumb things with cars and women.

The Martin-Zimmerman confrontation was not, shall we say, a clash of intellectual giants.

Probably being “given” the high school diploma shouldn’t be called “improving her self”.

He should be able to get four times that amount from NBC alone.

All the lies and hype and “BREAKING NEWS” everyone hell bent on “getting” GZ and everything you needed to know was in a local TV news on scene report and videos the very night of the shooting and early the next morning. Including an on air audio from the best witness, telling us that Trayvon was beating up George.

You could see the proximity of the buildings to the sidewalk and after seeing this, I was CONVINCED that George was innocent. 100%. That’s why George wasn’t even detained.

Then, the media “feeding frenzy”. The rest is history.

For someone who never should have even been arrested, GZ is lucky to be alive today and not in prison.

As I always say, the biggest problem this country has is the media. If we don’t do something about that, we can NEVER prevail.

If he were smart, which is questionable given his post trial antics, he should file for bankruptcy now, discharge the unpayable legal bills, and keep his options open.
