Kerry: Detainees could return to fight

Secretary of State John Kerry acknowledged on Sunday the possibility that the five Guantanamo Bay detainees released in a prisoner swap for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl could return to terrorism.

"I'm not telling you that they don't have some ability at some time to get back involved, but they also have an ability to get killed if they do that," he said in an interview that aired on CNN's "State of the Union." "And I don't think anybody should doubt the capacity of Americans to protect Americans," Kerry added.

The swap for five Taliban detainees for Bergdahl has sparked fierce controversy and criticism from Republicans, who have expressed anger at the 28-year-old soldier's suspected desertion and the potential that the freed detainees could return to combat.

One of those detainees has said he plans to return to fighting against the U.S.

But Kerry said that the U.S. is monitoring the released Taliban fighters, and that "they're not the only ones keeping an eye on them." And he emphasized that the U.S. is capable of dealing with the prisoners if they do return to terrorism, declaring "these guys pick a fight with us…at enormous risk."

Ultimately, Kerry defended the choice in much the same way President Obama has, as one central to the core values of the military and the U.S.

"What I know today is what the president of the United States knows, that it would have been offensive and incomprehensible to consciously leave an American behind, no matter what, to leave an American behind in the hands of people who would torture him, cut of his head, do any number of things," he said. "And we would consciously choose to do that? That's the other side of this equation. I don't think anybody would think that's an appropriate thing to do."

“Sounds like you’re not sure he served with honor and distinction,”

Yeah, let’s ask John “The Jaw” Kerry about what it means to serve with honor and distinction, a man (loose term) who demanded a Purple Heart for a minor scratch from a grain of rice, resulting from his own action.

Oh sorry, I didn’t mention he served a few weeks in Vietnam, most aren’t aware of that. /s

During the Civil War, Grant refused a prisoner exchange for the very reason that Lee would allow the returning prisoners to fight again.

"And I don't think anybody should doubt the capacity of Americans to protect Americans," Kerry added.

Like in Boston, John? Or Foot Hood?

"What I know today is what the president of the United States knows, that it would have been offensive and incomprehensible to consciously leave an American behind, no matter what, to leave an American behind in the hands of people who would torture him, cut off his head..."

So, John Effin', why did you and Juan McPain decide to walk away from and close the book on the POW/MIAs unaccounted for in Viet Nam?

I prefer to give Kerry the benefit of the doubt for his intentions and put the blame where it belongs....

Kerry deserves no benefit of any doubt. He is a man who has acted the traitor's part in his post-Viet Nam period -- from Paris and the peace negotiations to Detroit and the Winter soldiers.

I would further argue that Kerry is anything but "complex"; he is a simple buffoon and a congenital liar.

He has done what he was told to do because he hasn't the imagination to do anything else.

Ya know, Kerry got a purple heart in Viet Nam for standing in front of an enemy intent on killing Americans... or maybe it was for a paper cut.

So Kerry could care less about all those Shiites these 5 Taliban have killed in the past and will continue to kill. There will be no American troops left behind to protect the innocent Afghans once we leave. And we learned during 911, that waiting for an actual attack, is worthless. The US government could not even protect the Pentagon.

They should’ve implanted a chip inside their bodies that only a drone could recognize, before turning them loose.

Now, let’s have some faith in the administration...I am sure that these terrorists were given a stern talking to and informed that if caught on the battlefield again they would be taken to Git...uh, never mind
