My long-ago history professor made it quite clear why Islam spread at high speed.. The message then was “Convert or DIE,” and it probably still is... in that area.
And for that reason alone (but there are others) it is more of a totalitarian political system than it is a religion. They just use religion as a beard and a means of controlling the masses.
