... the western province of Anbar, where militants have managed to hold territory, including the city of Falluja and parts of neighboring Ramadi, for six months.
IIRC, Falluja was a city that even Saddam Hussein would not go into because it was so violent. US/Allies forces cleaned it out. Now, it sounds as if the infestation is back.

Exactly. I know someone that fought in Mosul during the worst of it. I’m sure he’s not happy that their sacrifice has been thrown away.
