...Shonda Rhimes delivered a poignant commencement speech to Dartmouth's graduating class of 2014. And while she admitted to being so nervous she could poop (her words) and completely unqualified to give advice, the Grey's Anatomy and Scandal creator did, in fact, dish out some extremely useful information.....
"When people give these kinds of speeches, they usually tell you...Dream and dream big. As a matter of fact, dream and don’t stop dreaming until your dream comes true. I think that’s crap....
"Whenever you see me somewhere succeeding in one area of my life, that almost certainly means that I am failing in another area of my life. That is the Faustian bargain one makes with the devil that comes with being a powerful working woman who is also a powerful mother. You never feel one hundred percent okay, you never get your sea legs, you are always a little nauseous. Something is always lost. Something is always missing.... And yet, I want my daughters to see me and know me as a woman who works.... The woman I am because I get to run Shondaland, because I get write all day, because I get to spend my days making things up, that woman is a better person — and a better mother."

“Be a doer, not a dreamer.” Great start!
But the address devolves into thick, self-absorbed treacle. Disappointing. I’ve never seen her TV shows but do admire her success, regardless of this painful effort.
To be a success at one thing is to the detriment of others in your life. I think that's great advice, and if she stopped there, she'd have nailed it. However, the rest of the feminist screed is as boring as it is predictable.
Story time with WBill....In another lifetime, I had a job that I was *extremely* successful at. World travel, zillion-dollar company card, fat salary, new car, the works. Drawback? I was never home. That life ruined my health and nearly cost me my marriage....things that are a whole lot more important than a new car and bragging rights at the office.
Luckily, I married a girl who is as patient as she is smart, and I got a second chance to get it right.
Now, I'm not a world traveller. I don't have the corporate Amex, and up until last year drove a car with 150K miles on it. However, I've got a great wife, great kids, I'm home in time for supper most days ..... and I'm much much happier for it.
Tradeoffs. In my case, they were absolutely worth it.

Happiness isn’t something you get. . .it is something you first give. . .and then receive.
There needs to be some balance to things. To start with, those kids were all raised to be high self-esteemed, undisciplined, slacker-goobers, with a half-assed education.
They also come with enormous school loan debts which threaten to derail their life track of getting married, having kids, owning a home, etc. Their grandparents left college penniless, but every penny they earned after taxes was theirs. Most of them won’t see their first break-even penny for a decade or more.
Sorry, dreams, self-esteem, frivolity, parties and fun are for those who are not in debt. Until you dig yourself out of that hole, you might as well get used to hard, dirty, repetitive work to buy your freedom. Boring work is better than painful work.
Face it, kids, most of you are “indentured servants”. Know what that means?
For those of you in stupid majors, like ethnic and gender studies, sports, many of the language and liberal and fine arts, you will not get jobs with those degrees. If you can scrape together enough money or grants to go to DeVry or ITT Tech, I suggest you do it. Because there are jobs for electronics technicians. Maybe automotive or air conditioner repair.
for every “do what you love and you will succeed” speech there are probably many more “do what you love and you’ll fail” people who are never asked to give speeches.
Do what you are GOOD AT and you’ll succeed- and often it will help you to finance your ability to do what you love in your free time
