$10 billion oil sands crude refinery planned for Canada's Pacific coast

A Vancouver-based company said on Tuesday it was planning to build a C$10 billion oil refinery on the north-west coast of British Columbia that could eventually process up to 1 million barrels per day of oil sands bitumen.

Pacific Energy Future Corp, which was set up in January, is looking at three potential building sites in Prince Rupert, BC.

The project is the second new refinery proposed for Canada's west coast to process the large quantities of crude oil coming out of Alberta's oil sands and export the refined products.

Pacific Energy Future Corp Executive Chairman Samer Salameh said the refinery could be producing products such as gasoline and diesel in about seven years.

The announcement comes a week before a federal government decision on whether to approve Enbridge Inc plans to build a 525,000 bpd pipeline from the oil sands to Kitimat, BC, where crude would be loaded on to supertankers and shipped to international markets.

That project, known as Northern Gateway, has run into fierce opposition from environmental and First Nations indigenous groups who say the risk of a crude oil spill is too great.

"While we believe it's in Canada's national strategic interest to gain access to international markets for Alberta's oil, especially the fast growing Asian market, the company believes it shouldn't be done at the sacrifice of BC's coast or broader environment and must be done in full partnership with First Nations," Pacific Energy Future Corp said in a statement.

I read some enviroweenie say, in regards to the Keystone pipeline, that every day the pipeline was not approved, was another day the big bad oil stayed in the ground.

Looks like the Canadians don’t think that way (thank goodness).

Posturing and pure BS.

Obama ain’t got the heart, mid, desire nor means for a real power demonstration.

The “need” for one? Oh absolutely! he NEEDS a victory someplace somehow over somebody.

But will Obama ever succeed in putting anything over Putin?
(Well, maybe kitchen drapes and an umbrella.)

Obama & putin are involved with the BC refinery?

On another note, the refinery might bring down West Coast gas prices.

The USA has about 150 refineries. Canada is down to maybe 20.

My error above - wrong cut-and-paste.

Here? Notice that the ONLY people “winning” with Obama’s continued dithering and posturing over the keystone pipeline are Obama’s union thugs in the railroads carrying the crude oil now, the union thugs in the cities and harbors trans-shipping the oil now, the railroad owners (Obama donors all!) and shipping magnates who are moving the oil barrel by barrel just like Rockefeller used to before in the 1890’s.

Follow the money to Obama’s donors and power brokers!

I posted on another thread about Steyer, but I'll repeat it here.

This refinery is part of the reason Steyer is giving $100 million to Democrats to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline. Not "climate change".

Steyer stands to make a bunch of money from a Trans-Canada pipeline from the oil sands to Canada's west coast. If the oil instead goes south through Keystone, he loses a bunch (or at least doesn't collect it).

Huh?

The Tar Sands are, themselves, the worlds largest oil spill, albeit natural.

Private companies are cleaning it up and these yahoos are worried about a little dripping on the ground?

They should be praising the companies who are working 24 hours a day to rid the world of the eyesore.

I would like to know more about a connection between Steyer and this west coast refinery and/or west bound pipeline?

Search for "Steyer Transmountain"

You'll find lots of info. Steyer claims he has divested his investments in this venture, but without looking at the books, I'm skeptical.
