Cantor Picks up Major Endorsement
The Hill ^ | June 08, 2014 | Alexandra Jaffe

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) picked up the endorsement of one of Virginia’s largest newspapers this weekend in his primary fight against economics professor Dave Brat.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch lauded Cantor as “indispensable” in an editorial published Sunday, just two days out from Election Day. In its endorsement, the editorial board touted Cantor’s long tenure and experience in the House, as well as his leadership and willingness to work across the aisle to move legislation.

“Cantor reflects Reagan's optimism and shuns the politics of resentment that pollute today's climate. He believes the economy retains great potential; government's job is to unleash the economy's inherent strength. His education proposals stress the disciplines Americans will need if they are to compete with the rest of the world,” the editorial reads.

It also credits Cantor with rallying “his Republican colleagues to unanimous opposition to ObamaCare,” and closes by stating it’s “preposterous” to suggest that Cantor is insufficiently conservative.

Cantor is expected to win on Tuesday, but has taken no chances in securing his seat against his little-known challenger. He spent an estimated $1 million over the past two months, much of it on television advertising, and had $1.5 million in the bank at the end of May.

Brat has raised and spent just a fraction of that, but received a boost from prominent conservative figures, like talk-show host Laura Ingraham. And a survey out last week conducted for conservative news site the Daily Caller by Vox Populi showed Cantor just 12 points head of his challenger, with 52 percent support among likely primary voters.

While that’s the slimmest margin Cantor has posted in a primary, it still gives him a win. And two other members of congressional GOP leadership — Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) — easily defeated their own challengers, setting up a strong precedent for a win for Cantor on Tuesday.

Not quite as dramatic as the Truman-Dewey event, but still pretty good. I believe the polling data and it's nature as a "lagging indicator". OI then wonder how much of the last minute movement was attributable to: (1) Cantor's earlier willingness to work with Obama, and then (2) Obama's recent treasonous act to release dangerous Taliban prisoners.

Of all the Obama scandals this one really has the population buzzing, and even those left of us wondering what the slimeball's real intentions are.

A funny thing happened on the way to the victory party.

Too dang good. He lost because he forgot he had a district full of actual people and he was so dang arrogant! I am glad he lost. I can’t believe he was in Washington DC at a fat cat fund raiser on the morning of the election....the guy was insane....in more ways than one!!!!!

I guess we'll be seeing the word "unexpected" yet again from the MSM.

I happen to think that the Richmond Times-Dispatch is insufficiently conservative and have always refused to subscribe to it, though I live in their distribution area.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch lauded Cantor as “indispensable”.

He was "indispensable", all right. Indispensable in doing things voters do not want done.

I gave up on Faux News a couple of years ago, but the husband DVRs “Fox and Friends” every morning and watches it while I am in the next room on the ‘puter, so I catch a few comments here and there. This morning, one of the clowns was proposing that Brat’s win came about because of Rats voting in the primary.

I could not see the TV from here, but I wonder if the hosts were in mourning clothes.

Yeah, newspapers endorsing a republican candidate???

I guess that worked out real well...Probably gave Canto a 1-2 point boost...

Considering he eventually lost by 12 points...

That worked out fabulously!!!

My heart bleeds purple Kool-Aid for the establishment in that party...

BTW, thank you FReepers that live in the 7th District in Virginia...

You are to be applauded for your personal and political courage...

We should all learn that the sun still comes up when you clean your own house of the political destructiveness, apathy, fecklessness we see in a majority of the people elected to these offices around the country...
