It looks as if Hillary Clinton just made the first gaffe of her new book tour, which is widely perceived to be a proxy for her still-unannounced presidential campaign. During an ABC news interview scheduled to air Monday night, Clinton recalled how she "struggled" to purchase "houses" after she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, left the White House. Both Clintons have embarked on a lucrative speaking career since then, reportedly earning over $100 million in speaking fees alone, and the conservative media quickly jumped on the seemingly tone-deaf remark.
"We came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt," Clinton told ABC's Diane Sawyer for an interview that previewed the Tuesday launch of Clinton's memoir, "Hard Choices." "We had no money when we got there and we struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea's education. It was not easy."
Sawyer pressed Clinton on whether her speaking fees about $200,000 for a single speech, according to The New York Times are something voters will be able to find relatable.
"Do you think Americans are going to understand five times the median income in this country for one speech?" Sawyer asked.
"Well, let me put it this way: I thought making speeches for money was a much better thing than being connected with any one group or company as so many people who leave public life do," Clinton replied.

All will be forgiven because liberals have no core value that they are not willing to violate.
I think it’s abundantly clear that Hillary is not Obama and will not get away with the same level of evasiveness Obama does. If she had those political skills, there would have been no Obama in 2008. She is going to be a worthy opponent, but she is not unbeatable.
I think Obama’s Clarification Team is available
Not to mention, she was apparently quite capable of ponying up to buy that huge $5 million place in Chappaqua in 1999, less than a year after leaving the WH.
I only *wish* I was that kind of “broke”.
Hillary sure screwed up trying to come across as a homeless, “dead broke” bag lady. Americans aren’t THAT stupid.
Their core values are power and control.
Did she offhandedly refer "my muslim faith?"
That is exactly what she is saying. Why work when you can just talk? This definitely puts her on the defensive from both the left and right. Why were they in debt? Yeah let’s revisit that. He he.
While this is true. The primary sources of ‘news’ that the low information voters, the people who would vote for her, will gloss over this and it will be quickly forgotten.
Yep, she makes it sound as if her only choices were speaking, or working for some lobbying group. Sheesh.......
Peddling influence is such hard work.
The story I heard was that their reputation was in such shambles, and Bill Clinton's legal troubles such a stain on their reputation, that they couldn't even get a lender to extend a mortgage on the homes they were looking to buy without getting a guarantee from a wealthy co-signer.
One prospective co-signer -- a former member of the Clinton administration whose name would be known to everyone here -- basically said: "No 'effing way."
Another prospective co-signer -- another former member of the Clinton administration who is now a U.S. Senator -- agreed to the deal.
Even shady lenders are reluctant to extend multi-million dollar loads to people who should be living in a trailer park.
She knew damn well that she was too shrill and unpleasant to have any success selling used cars — which was apparently her third career option at that point.
Actually SHE’S just as unprincipled and unscrupulous as “O” is or EVER was!
The reason HE got so much Liberal support is that everyone KNEW (knows) he is completely malleable and compliant. He’d NEVER work or lead independently... he’d do JUST EXACTLY as he was directed or told to do.
SHE would not!
I don’t think the Dem establishment wants this woman anywhere near the nomination. She is not invincible and she and Bill bring a ton of personal and political baggage with them. Look for increased media coverage on other potential presidential candidates like Andrew Cuomo, Elizabeth Warren and other lefty dingbats. I’m not buying that Hillary’s nomination is already a done deal.
Ah, that any of us should have had to struggle with such onerous burdens as the Family Clinton has borne so bravely and well.
Right off, some 95% of the personal woe in this world is self-induced, and I do not see that ratio much at variance in this instance. The other five percent or so comes from unforeseen incidentals in life, like falling and suffering a traumatic brain injury and the formation a clot, causing some physical impairment.
But wait, why DID Herself Madame Benghazi, the Cold & Joyless, fall in the first place? Falling-down drunk again?
This sort of thing happens a lot, it was only a matter of time until some irreversible outcome was going to occur.
And it is starting to affect her judgment, in ways large and small. Normally well crafted “explanations” are sufficient to cover inconsistencies and lapses, but the excuses are starting to sound feeble, if not altogether lame.
Giving speeches at $200,000 a pop is much less stressful than having to answer the phone at 3 AM in the White House. Not that Herself would answer any better than the Current Occupant.
In fairness, she and Bill had a mortgage on the Chappaqua house, and the mansion in DC they bought.
But, let’s get real. How many of us can relate, or have sympathy to someone being “broke” because they have mortgages on the mansions they live in? Or the legal bills they had, mostly due to Bill being sued for sexual harrassment?
Translation: "Why work for a living when people will give me money just for showing up and giving a speech? In fact, I can make more money in 10 speeches than most CEOs make in annual salary and bonuses!"
