Your's is a polite observation.
Gen. Chamberlain lost a lot of good men, friends and neighbors all, in his commitment to preserve our nation.
I suspect it is more likely he is trying to figure out how to return and knock some heads.

Chamberlain was given a two-year sabbatical in 1862 to study in Europe. He could have sat out the Civil War in the comfort of university libraries instead of standing on the bloodiest battlefields ever in America. What professor today at Bowdoin, or elsewhere, would choose today as Chamberlain did?
