Iraq Asked U.S. for Strikes, Officials Say
New York Times ^ | June 11, 2014 | By MICHAEL R. GORDON and ERIC SCHMITT

As the threat from Sunni militants in western Iraq escalated last month, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki secretly asked the Obama administration to consider carrying out airstrikes against extremist staging areas, according to Iraqi and American officials.

But Iraq’s appeals for military assistance have so far been rebuffed by the White House, which has been reluctant to open a new chapter in a conflict that President Obama has insisted was closed when the United States withdrew the last of its forces from Iraq in 2011.

A spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Bernadette Meehan, declined to comment on Mr. Maliki’s requests and the administration’s response, saying in a statement, “We are not going to get into details of our diplomatic discussions, but the government of Iraq has made clear that they welcome our support” in combating the Islamic extremists.

I have been informed that the soldiers who deserted in Mosul and Tikrit are mainly Sunnis, the same as the terrorists, and because of family considerations, can’t afford to oppose them. Maybe the Shiites will resist them more effectively.

Yet again, Republicans try and get us peace with honor and democrats screw it up.

Who wants to bet that, ten or twenty years from now, democrats will be using Iraq and Vietnam as a stick against Republicans?

This makes me sick to my stomach. Obama is ruining any and all trust we had built up with Israel, Iraq, Egypt, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Russia, and he is in the process of doing the same with Japan, China, and South Korea.

Even the new Australian PM is forging alliances to thwart the Clown’s global warming agenda.

He lost face with Brazil when it was discovered he had tapped their phones. Same with Germany.

The only friends he seems to have is with the mullahs in Iran and the rabidly pro-sodomy David Cameron in Britain. And neither of THEM are particularly loved by the populations THERE either.

A disaster all over the world. Massive suck.

Isn't it cool to have the US Army at your beck and call? The Iraqi army bravely ran away without putting up a fight. Now Al-Maliki wants the USA to commit a war crime for him.

And Obama won’t shed a tear, he wants that to happen..actually what he wants is what the majority of Muslims want, a Caliphate..he is probably grinning from ear to ear right now

If the Sunni’s take Iraq, look for a major war. Iran, Syria and Turkey will carve the country up and they will ethnically cleanse the Kurds.

There will be a "Fall of Baghdad" within a week, much like the Fall of Saigon in 1975.

And just as John Kerry & Pals cheered in 1975 they'll probably cheer today as well.

No no, couldn’t be, John Kerry tells us that all we did was roll in like “Jenjis” Khan and terrorize them.

Holy crap. All you need to do is send a few Predator drones with some hellfires and blow up some camps. They rebels will freak.

Just like the fall of Vietnam. Orcestrated by Treasonous Democrats Once again. Withhold weapons, withhold support, let em die. Democrats never change. Guess 0 is ticked he couldn’t keep the muslim brotherhood in charge of Egypt. Couldn’t get al-quda to take over Syira. 0 will have to settle for taking over Iraq and showing his contempt for the sacrifices of our armed forces.

Why can’t Iraq strike them themselves? I know their military has a habit of cutting and run...but even so...they still can fight on the ground. Don’t they have any fighter planes?

Someone should take the “Like a Boss” bumper sticker and substitute the words “When a pussy is in the White House people die”

American addiction to oil and investment in the Middle East.

You’re unaware of the Saudi connection to recent American presidents? Never heard of the Iraq invasion of Kuwait and the danger of Iraqi invasion of Saudi Arabia?

No. They bought a few F-16s though...but haven’t got them yet. We destroyed all their other planes during the two Gulf Wars.

I saw this, and it’s outrageous. Hussein Obama cannot hide behind the excuse that “the Iraqi government doesn’t want us there.” They have clearly asked for our support.

I’m not saying we put boots on the ground. Some targeted drone strikes or air strikes though would give the Iraqi Army needed cover, and the cost of it would just be a rounding error in the defense budget.

Sorry I’m actually pretty pissed about this. I’m going to write a letter to my congressman about this.
