Why can't these ships hire and keep well armed and trained security personnel for their voyages and prevent the hijacking to start with? There needs to be a STRONG disincentive to attempt such atrocities in the future and paying off pirates is NOT how it's done. You'd think Obama would understand this part but his empty headed action with Bergdahl is ONLY guaranteeing MORE Americans will be kidnapped and held for ransom.

It would be better to have the equivalent of a WWII Q-boat out there, It looks like a merchantman but is armed to the teeth. A few rounds of turning skiffs to splinters and feeding the fish, and you’d think the Somalis would find an alternate source of funding.

That was actually my business plan. The problem would be logistics. Everyone has different rules for weapons and such, it would be difficult.
