WSJ: Iranian Forces Reportedly Help Iraqi Army Retake Tikrit

Farnaz Fassihi reports in the Wall Street Journal that Iran's Revolutionary Guard forces are now active in Iraq, assisting the Iraqi army in the fight against ISIS militants in the city of Tikrit.

Fassihi writes:

"Two battalions of the Quds Forces, the elite overseas branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps that have long operated in Iraq, have come to the aid of the besieged, Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, they [Iranian security sources] said.

Combined Iraqi-Iranian forces had retaken control across 85% of Tikrit, the birthplace of former dictator Saddam Hussein, according to Iraqi and Iranian security sources."

There is a silver lining after all

Iran-Iraq war II. Iran and Al Qaeda bashing each others brains out.

Not a bad alternative.

Scenario: Iran launches a preemptive invasion of Iraq to keep the Sunni caliphate from forming, not to mention right on its doorstep. Rationale: An intolerable situation must be resolved for the good of regional stability. Result: Iran annexes Shiite areas of Iraq, if not the whole country.

That didn’t take long at all.

Remember, though.. the baboons don't engage in land wars with equal or superior enemies... they run and find soft targets like day cares and schools.

This was their only play. Let the Iranians fight for them. Waiting for Obama to act would only get them beheaded.

Re:

Why is it the responsibility or obligation of our brave soldiers of our seriously overstretched Army of the past decade to save Malaki from his blunders of purging Sunni from his regime? Shouldn’t it first be the responsibility of Iraq’s neighbors to step up and then we can supplement their coalition action? Iran, Turkey, Jordan etc.

It is grandstanding fools like McCain who keep wanting to inject our Army into Middle-Eastern religious conflicts, when his record is rife with blown calls and ignorance about the region. For instance:

April 23, 2003 McCain claims that the Sunnis and the Shias have no history of conflict in Syria and will be able to get along in the post war. Wrong. And when questioned he predicted that there would be no signifcant Sunni/Shia violent conflict in Iraq.
