The movie was directed by British-Irish John Boorman, but the book was written by James Dickey of Georgia and South Carolina, who studied Clemson and Vanderbilt and taught at U South Carolina.

He was as Southern as anybody else with roots going back before the Revolution. He was a city boy, though, and apt to be suspicious of what his country cousins got up to.

FWIW I'm pretty sure that Thad Cochran wasn't talking about bestiality.
