Their leader was captured by Americans in 2005 and spent 4 years in jail. He was released in 2009.

I've never understood the concept of surrender when facing certain death... I mean, aren't you dead either way? Might as well fight. :-/
The ISIL is a Sunni militia that began taking over Sunni-dominated cities in Iraq. The Iraqi police and military personnel in those areas capitulated as much out of a sense of loyalty as anything else. We can all be pretty sure that the Shi'ites in the Baghdad area won't be surrendering like that -- and it looks like they may have Iranian military support behind them, too.

If this is true, the cowardice and incompetence of the Iraqi military and individual soldier knows no bounds.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was MOST of these guys. Why anyone would surrender is beyond me.
It’s not “surrender OR die” with ISIL - it’s “surrender AND die.”
So, fight to the end.
