Separatists in Ukraine used a shoulder-fired missile to shoot down a large Ukrainian military transport jet as it was trying to land at an airport in the eastern city of Luhansk on Saturday, killing all 49 people on board, the military said. The attack was the deadliest episode for the Ukrainian military since the unrest began in the countrys east.
On approach to the Luhansk airport a Ukrainian armed forces military transport Il-76 airplane was shot down with an antiaircraft rocket system, the military wing of the prosecutor generals office said in a statement. In addition to the nine crew members, 40 paratroopers were on board. All of them died.
The statement said the office had opened an investigation into what it called a terrorist act. Separatists from the self-declared Peoples Republic of Luhansk confirmed that they had shot down the jet and said that all military airplanes in the area, which is near the border with Russia, were targets.
A surveillance video that captured the planes destruction showed a streak of light rising from the ground, then an explosion near the airport where the plane was making its final approach to Luhansk.

I wonder if anyone has bothered to inform the golfer-in-chief?
Maybe he will read about it in the news papers, but I doubt it. He only cares when someone publically questions him.
I don’t know, our plane is on the runway at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos and there are a few idiots taking pictures like it’s a big deal. I go to a dog park on the back side of the base and it was supposed to be closed today, but not a damn was given and we went anyway!
Useless and tragic fratricide. Twenty five years from now those borders will be as important as the border between North and South Carolina. Te German -Russian trade axis, which between 1870-1914 was one of the world’s most prosperous and dynamic, is destined to revive. Poland, Ukraine and Belarus sit on the axis and will be part of it and will also prosper. Germany is tiring of its debt ridden and non productive EU partners. It will turn its attention to the boundless resources, land and economic potential of Russia.
Obviously the light wasn't actually rising up, but shining down from a faulty fuel tank that exploded.
The Ukrainians need to ground their entire air force and look into this immediately.
I think the troubles in Northern Ireland back in the day will look mellow compared to what lies ahead for the EUkraine.
Heaven forbid the folks in Kiev overturn a few cars at the Russian embassy in response.
