Operator of Blue Ridge Parkway inn fights to keep contract
The Roanoke Times ^ | June 12, 2014 | Staff

The operator of the Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway who defied the federal government shutdown last year now must fight to keep his contract.

Bruce O'Connell has operated the inn for 40 years, the Asheville Citizen-Times (http://avlne.ws/1xNysyN) reported.

O'Connell kept the inn open last year, even though the federal government shutdown brought an order to close during the funding dispute in Washington.

The park concession contract is open for bid.

O'Connell says he's not worried about fallout from his high-profile fight last year. He's more worried that a number of similar contracts recently have gone to big companies with lots of resources.

Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts last year won a 10-year contract for management of Peaks of Otter Lodge and Restaurant on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Bedford, Virginia, as well as its retail stores and shuttle service. The company is a leader in hospitality operations with park concessions in Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon.

"There seems to be a trend, or a movement, which is encouraging the little guys to go away and the big guys to come in," he said.

O'Connell is hoping to win the contract for another 10 years.

Recall the fight last October over the "government shutdown."

Of course, they have to most money to hand over to big government.

We have to keep the government/corporate complex growing.

It will be interesting to see the characteristics of his “replacements.”

The Zero is a very petty man or whatever he is.

I think that the concession owner for Acadia Park in Maine went from a local company to a large outfit also.

I’ve been to Peaks of Otter many times in the past. It was a wonderful little place. I’m afraid that a big “national” company will ruin it by focusing on the ROI for the investors.

He made a public stand against THE GAY MEDIA MESSIAH.
That simply cannot be allowed. One of the minions will assure whatever financial losses have to be taken, to make sure that an example is made here.

Count on it.

These are VERY vindictive people.

Used to play music in several bands up on Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Forest. The pay was low but worth a day in the high mountains. Right after Obama’s first election, all bands were told they could not play any Christian music in the National Forest. No hymns. Many libs were okay with that but many others refused to even offer to bid for the gigs. What I found most disturbing was these same administrators had no problem scheduling Muslim events. I felt that only Christians weren't allowed.

“Politics is about rewarding your friends and punishing your enemies”. The Chicago way. From the mouth of the corrupt one himself.

He is a piece of slime. Wouldn’t it be nice in life to see him get what he deserves.

Well, after traveling the world with my husband some years ago, I am going to see OUR country now. Husband is gone but he would be glad to know what I'm doing.

I've see New York City (and now know why it's called the Big Apple), Yellowstone (and Grand Tetons), parts of Texas and the Grand Canyon. This fall I've visiting Boston for a tour of the changing of the leaves and in November I'm going down the Mississippi in a paddle wheeler from Memphis to New Orleans, with three extra days in New Orleans.

Next year: more USA...Shenandoah Valley and the Great Smokey Mountains (right down the Blue Ridge Parkway).
