The Atlantic: Conservatives Might Be Left Out of Next Tech Wave Due to Dislike of Cities

I have a question for Alexis C. Madrigal of The Atlantic. Were you watching AMC's Halt and Catch Fire last Sunday? I have to ask because your humble correspondent has the suspicion that you watched and took note of the spaced out  character of Cameron Howe, a genius computer programmer who enjoys playing video games and having her ears perpetually plugged in to a Walkman playing loud Hard Rock music. On Sunday's episode, Cameron was walking around downtown Dallas while spending the money from her first tech company paycheck when she met some homeless drug addicts in an alley. So with her "urban sensibility" she then rents them a hotel room where they all party down and they show their appreciation by giving Cameron a really ugly amateur tattoo on her arm.

It is with this in mind that I suspect that Ms. Madrigal, trying to dream up a magazine storyline, conceived the the idea that most computer programmers have the same tastes as Cameron Howe and prefer city living in contrast to those "yahoo" conservatives who would rather live in more quiet areas. The result was the appearance of a stunningly ridiculous Atlantic article, Why Conservatives Might Be Left Out of the Next Wave of Tech:

Just the opposite is true.

With the proliferation of broadband and telecommuting, people are going to be working, shopping and getting educated online, which means you don’t need the city. You can live anywhere, even the great north woods if you wanted to.

I have two jobs, both remote, doing most of my shopping online, and don’t have to leave the house unless I want to eat out.

I wasn’t raised in a city, and have no desire to live in one again-I’m not an ant or a bee. Satellite internet isn’t the ultimate, but it works-I can get bids done, etc. Going Galt is the only future for me...

...Presuming they let us continue to have Internet and cellphone connections. (Battery-backup HAM stations will be more valuable in such a fix.)

Yep I saw that too. I could not change the channel fast enough. I will not be watching any more of this trash.

A while ago someone on this forum posted an article about some young lib journalist who decided it would be an excellent idea to move with his wife and young children to a big city in the downtown area. One of things the idiot noticed was a very high violent crime rate in his neighborhood. But gee whiz, it was just too much to get out of the area and miss out on all the wonderful ethnic restaurants in the immediate area. This is how dumb libs are. Having the opportunity to eat ethnic food overrode the risk of his family members being assaulted.

Actually, I think I changed the channel just at the right time.

I’ve been waiting for this activity to show up .. sadly, the writing has been on the wall for some time.
