Mixed reports Tuesday revealed that between 44 and 52 prisoners were killed along with two policemen during an apparent attempted jail-break at a police station in Baquba, 37 miles from Baghdad. According to Shia policemen stationed at the small jail, ISIS militants stormed the jail and tried to free all of its detainees.
Iraq’s chief military spokesman strongly believed the attackers belonged to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). Some accuse the policemen of killing the prisoners while they were locked up in their jail cells. Others say it was ISIS that killed the prisoners by lobbing grenades into their jail cells.
On Monday night, ISIS fighters took possession of several neighborhoods in Baquba after hours-long gun battles. The recent hostilities in Baquba show ISIS is inching closer to Baghdad each day. It represents the closest that ISIS has come to Iraq’s capital city thus far.
In Baghdad, the bodies of four young men were founded in the middle of a street on Tuesday morning....

This present situation in Iraq with ISIS is the best chance the Kurds will ever have in carving out their own country! The Kurds are smart in NOT HELPING the government of Iraq in defending itself. It’s all the better for the Kurds!
But Turkey will definitely try to prevent the establishment of an independent Kurdistan for fear that the Turkish Kurds will revolt and join.
OTOH, when I was in high school, someone asked me who would win if the Soviets and the Red Chinese went to war. Without hesitation, I said we would win because our two main enemies were destroying each other. The same principle applies to a war between Iran/Syria on one hand and ISIS on the other.
What difference will one more life, one more plane, one more bomb make?

I’ve been hearing that ISIS is ‘about 38 miles away from Baghdad” for the last three days. Have they stopped to refuel or feed themselves? Now would be an opportune time for a powerful drone to finish it’s work for the free people of the world. We may be better off letting both sides battle and eliminate themselves as a growing threat.
Turkey does not want an independent Kurdistan, but this situation might distract Turkey enough for the Kurds to make progress toward that goal.
The more the radical Sunnis (whom the Turkish regime are supporting) go high intensity with the Shia/Iranians, the less they will have to focus on the Kurds.
The Kurds will be walking a tightrope (as always) to balance their relations with their more powerful neighbors, but this is a great opportunity for them.
They need to dig in extensive fortifications and organize/train/arm every military age male like the Swiss do. Build capability now, so that they will be a harder/more costly foe for the Turks, Arabs or Persians to screw with after their other conflicts calm down.
Kurds are the only sane people outside of Israel. They should be given their pre-WW1 turf.
ISIS cannot take Baghdad without a massively larger force.
Baghdad is dominated by Shiites.
They will fight to the death against the Sunni ISIS.
Every place ISIS captured before today was dominated by fellow Sunnis.
The predominantly Sunni soldiers threw down their weapons because they did not want to be branded as religious traitors.
The Shiites in Baghdad will not throw down their weapons.

The only sense is Kurdish north....Sunni middle and Shiite south...marsh Arab enclave in Euphrates delta
Nothing else will ever work without a heavy hand to keep them in place
They are planning to encircle and lay siege.
No one is talking much about ISIS’s ultimate goal. They want to dominate the Region by establishing an Islamic Caliphate State throughout. I don’t think they have partitioning of Iraq in mind. If ISIS manages to take control of the Shia parts of Iraq, they will then and in time go after Kurdistan and beyond.
That’s Barry’s goal, too.
The way Islamic groups have been taking over various parts of the M.E. last few years, I wouldn’t be surprised. Anyhow, there are a lot of ‘curious’ things about this ISIS group. For one they’re too well planned, organised, ideologically overboard and of course ruthless. They’re obviously not a bunch of goat herders.
