A very strong case could be made that the term “Fighting Irish” was disparaging at the time it was adopted by Notre Dame in 1927. In fact, the university objected to the use of the name for many years before finally relenting. Examples abound from the period describing the “fighting Irish” as drunken hooligans of low moral character. All it would take is five people who find the name offensive.
