President Barack Obama announced new executive orders Tuesday to make huge swaths of the Pacific Ocean off limits to fishing, energy exploration and other economic activities.
The move would create the world’s largest marine sanctuary, and is part of a broader push to tackle global warming and halt offshore energy development. This effort will be led by Secretary of State John Kerry and White House adviser John Podesta.

Since when does the USA own vast swaths of the Pacific Ocean?
I know Bush created a huge oceanic national park around the northern Hawaiian islands, which are mainly shoals and atolls. But we presumable ‘own’ this are of the ocean.

What Obama is doing here is asserting the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ).
With the Magnussan Act in the mid 70's, the US claimed the 200 nautical mile EEZ for the purpose of commercial fishing. Then, a few years later, the UN Law of the Sea Treaty granted a 200 nautical mile EEZ to all nations for all commercial purposes.
Reagan didn't sign LOST but he issued a proclamation asserting the US's right to the LOST 200 mile EEZ.

I would absolutely HATE to be on 0’s Secret Service security team and have to analyze all the threats, perceived threats, and rants they see on the Internet daily about this man. I bet the SS budget has exploded beyond imagination. I would hate it even worse if I realized they were well earned...: )
