I remember back in the days of the Clinton Administration there was a piece of legislation on fighting the trafficking of Eastern European women form the economically depressed ex Soviet Union and Eastern Block countries.

It totally unexpectedly went down in flames at the last minute and failed to pass. One of the major proponents of the bill was obviously devastated and in shock at it's failure.

He explicitly stated that the Hillary Clinton was personally responsible for torpedoing the legislation at the very last minute. Clinton essentially professed to be a big advocate, but then backstabbed everyone in the process in a last minute back room campaign to scuttle the law and keep it from passing.
