Communities are objecting .... over 1,000 turned out when they found out that HHS was going to put kids at St. Paul's College. The outcry was pretty substantial .... enough that even Mark Warner got involved.

Brunswick community blasts immigrant plan

In the aftermath of a public hearing Thursday in Lawrenceville, Sen Mark R. Warner, D-Va., joined those calling for the federal government to drop plans to shelter immigrant children at Saint Paul's College.

"The federal government should look elsewhere for an appropriate location for this facility. The failure of federal agencies to work with the community before committing to locate this facility at Saint Paul's was fundamentally wrong and disrespectful to local leaders and the residents we represent," Warner said in a statement. "I strongly encourage the agencies involved to learn from their missteps in Lawrenceville and Brunswick County."

Residents jammed the auditorium of Brunswick High School to question why federal dollars are being spent on alien children rather than native-born children in their economically depressed community.

They jeered when they were told Homeland Security had screened the young immigrants to ensure that they would pose no security threat, questioning how a college built in 1888 could be made secure.

The sentiment last night was overwhelming and emotionally against the project.

Residents questioned how the U.S. had gotten into the orphanage business and why veterans have to wait longer for health care than the Central American immigrants who crossed into this country illegally.
