Mississippi's Black Voters Should Vote for Thad Cochran
Slate ^ | Jamelle Bouie

Posted on 06/20/2014 5:41:43 PM PDT by nickcarraway

If the status quo holds, Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran will lose his seat to Chris McDaniel, the upstart Tea Party Republican who pushed the longtime senator into a run-off election. And so, rather than persuade McDaniel's supporters, Team Cochran is trying to change the status quo by appealing to a new class of voters: African Americans. Here's the New York Times with more:

It is a remarkable political science experiment, and it also may be the only path to victory left to Mr. Cochran. But after being narrowly edged out by Mr. McDaniel, 41, in the Republican primary earlier this month, Mr. Cochran, 76, needs to expand the number of voters who will show up for the runoff, which is open to any Mississippi resident who did not vote in the Democratic primary. The winner on Tuesday will face former Representative Travis Childers, a conservative Democrat, in November.

“We’ve got efforts reaching out to black voters in Mississippi who want to vote for Thad because they like what Thad is for,” said Austin Barbour, a Cochran campaign adviser. “Thad Cochran is someone who, even with his conservative message, represents all of Mississippi. He’s not some hostile screamer.”

I hope McDaniel points out that the old “southern gentleman” is once again trying to use the blacks. Cochran might as well ask them to come back to the plantation because he’s got a job for them.

If Cochran solicits votes from Dems in the primary does that mean conservatives should return the favor by voting for the Dem in the general election?

Will Slate and the Ruling Class support Cochran in the general if he wins the run-off? I doubt it.

Cochran is toast, no conservative is going to support him in the general.

Are you sure? I thought that anyone who didn’t vote in the Democrat primary could vote in the runoff.

No, it’s an open primary that the GOP loves so much.

It is still against the law has been stated for people to vote in a runoff for someone they do not intend to vote for in the general.

it is ILLEGAL for them to vote in the Republican primary if they are RATS!!!!

Could you cite the state law that supports your assertion? I should warn you that it will be difficult for you to do since Mississippi does not have party registration and voters are free to vote in whichever primary they choose. What is not permitted is to vote in a Republican Party runoff when you have already voted in the Democrat Party primary.

Besides, why shouldn't they vote for Cochran? He is the Democrat candidate and if reelected will continue to be the Democrat Senator from Mississippi. What is shocking is the number of Republicans who voted for this guy in the Primary and who will vote for him again in the runoff after he and the Democrats have shown his true colors.

MS Code 23-15-575, states: “No person shall be eligible to participate in any primary election unless he intends to support the nominations made in which he participates.”

And they fully intend to support Cochran. He has Slate’s endorsement, what more could a Democrat ask for? He is their candidate and they are just as likely to vote for him in the General as they are to support the sham candidate that the Democrats have put forward. Tuesday’s race is the General Election, in effect. So, why are Republicans going to vote for the Democrat?

What they are doing is perfectly legal. Mississippi might want to consider getting rid of open primaries, they are the refuge of scoundrels, thieves, and the corrupt ruling class.

They will need to arrest these Democratic voters that attempt to vote in the runoff.
