The IRS Had a Contract With an Email Backup Company
reason.com ^ | June 20, 2014 | By Peter Suderman

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said it can't provide emails sent between 2009 and 2011 that were requested by congressional investigators because of hard drive crashes.

The agency said that emails stored on dead drives were lost forever because its email backup tapes were recycled every six months, and employees were responsible for keeping their own long-term archives.

The IRS had a contract with email backup service vendor Sonasoft starting in 2005, according to FedSpending.org, which lists the contract as being for "automatic data processing services." Sonasoft's motto is "email archiving done right," and the company lists the IRS as a customer.

In 2009, Sonasoft even sent out a Tweet advertising its work for the IRS...

There were several opening for precise followup of his answers, but most of the committee seemed determined to follow his own script. Frustrating.

Agreed. One point was when the IRS dope said he wasn't sure "if hard drives had identifiers or serial numbers." lol. Of all computer parts, the hard drive contains the most serial numbers and identifiers. This is the most critical of all computer parts. They could have made him look like a fool and destroyed his credibility on anything else he said.

It’s like saying I can no longer access my Yahoo email account because my office computer’s hard drive failed. Government email is stored on servers away from the user. Any email that has been sent or received is stored somewhere else.

The House green lighted presidential criminality

Am going to go back a little further and say the Senate bares the responsibility of green lighted presidential criminality by not convicting clinton during his criminal reign. This in no manner though excuses the House for their current in-action(s) on the too many to count criminal activities of the obama crowd. Cannot excuse the lame-stream media either. Each of us knows what would be taking place in Congress and in the lame-stream if obama was and Clinton had been republicans. Is frustrating to see so many that truly hate All Americans operate so freely to destroy All Americans.

Just spitballin a crazy thought!!!

Six IRS employees victimized by hard drive crashes.
All six involved in Terrorizing taxpayers for political viewpoints.

Does DARMA, DoD, NSA have some sort of “Stuxnet” worm that seeks out and destroys e-mails and hard drive’s???

The worm does not have to damage the drive, just return the appearance of damage when the drive is examined via software

Now, removing my tinfoil hat!

Yes, Sonasoft, IBM, EMC, and any other storage, backup, email retrieval company that the IRS uses should be called in to testify.

“The IRS Had a Contract With an Email Backup Company”

Duh. Obviously.

Everybody knows they destroyed evidence, and are probably still doing so. The pathetic GOP is jumping up and down, saying, “look, look! there’s a squirrel in the tree!”

Cut down the damn tree, already! Where is the special investigative committee? Where are the prosecutors? Where is the appeal for a writ of mandamus and an order to produce to the DC Circuit? Where are the Federal marshals?

By being this weak, the GOP is only emboldening and strengthening “Obama”.

The reason the SA was so successful in boosting public acceptance and eventually respect for the NSDAP was not the few Jews they beat up or the few shops they wrecked.

The reason they were so successful was the very visible and wide-open lack of prosecution for crimes that any ordinary and orderly German would go to prison for.

As one of Obama’s heroes once said, “People will follow the strong horse”. That is EXACTLY what is happening right now. Fight fire with fire, or the game is lost.

the ‘c’ in clinton should not be capitalized ... I hold no respect for clinton. My apology for the error, everyone.

Betting the 3rd party provider performs multiyear archive service.

IRS retains current “six month” history.
IRS, on a rolling basis, sends the “seventh” month out to an Iron Mountain or some service for long term Archiving

yes, that is the excuse obama's followers use constantly that we are racists and bigoted ... Is sad they don't realize where he is taking them as well as those of us speaking up against him. There are some of obama's followers begin to awake. Would be better if all of them awoke. We're all in this together and, no doubt, obama and his minions are not making the situation better for any American. All Americans will suffer if obama and his administration wins the victory. This is not an opinion! Am certain.

Some good comments here:

Republicans keep pressing IRS over lost emails from Lerner, six others (Calling IT Professionals!!!)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3169984/posts

E-mails are NOT stored on hard drives, but on servers, with backups. Also the entire hard drive is backed up every day to servers.

This is the most pathetic excuse. Republicans should subpoena the IRS contract with their IT providers and get their IT providers in front of Congress!

Every company backs up their data — after the 9-11 attack even to geographically different locations and they are telling us that the IRS only keeps data for six months?

They are selling us the Brooklyn bridge.

Republicans should take action to get to the bottom of this, not just whine...

Someone I know works at Boeing and he had to agree to not even send emails regarding the Malaysian plane due to possibility of future legal problems.

Where I work if we lose an excel file we just order a restored copy from the backup, and I’ve seen specific time period histories of emails delivered to 3rd parties.

I’ve had a number of friends, in and around Federal IT, say that the way to crack this is to subpoena the list of IRS IT vendors, start calling in their staff (from the execs down to the systems developers and administrators), putting them under oath and demanding answers under threat of Contempt of Congress and perjury.

Very little can actually be done about Federal staff (both political and career) that dig in their heels and refuse to testify. But businesses, and non-Fed government contractors with their professional reputations on the line, are a completely different matter.

The Government will make Sonasoft an offer they cannot refuse.

Loss of all Government contracts, and destruction of the Business. Send all upper management to jail based on trumped up charges, adjudicated by a Federal Judge who happens to be a major 0bama bundler.

Or, proffer this lame excuse which sounds plausible
