Long Beach, I kid you not is called the “Home of Gangsta Rap,” as Snoop Doggy Dogg was born there and began his “career.” Yes, it’s not a bastion of Whiteness.
The part of Long Beach where I used to live was almost all white — though there was a large Cambodian population not far from there.
Oh, black people lived in LB back in the 50s. Their kids went to Poly High, which was about 50-50 black and white. The other high schools were all white. I don’t remember any hostility when I would be in a black neighborhoodin fact, just the opposite people were generally pleasant.
Of course, this was before there were real gangs in SoCal. We’d read or hear about street gangs “back east” and be amazed how out of control things were out there. It was a different world.
