John Kerry lands in Baghdad to press Iraqi leaders as insurgency spreads

BAGHDAD: US secretary of state John Kerry landed in Baghdad on Monday to press Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to form a more inclusive government in response to a Sunni insurgency that has swept much of northern and western Iraq.

Kerry's visit came after Sunni militants took strongholds along Iraq's western border at the weekend, strengthening supply routes from Syria where they have exploited a three-year-old rebellion to capture swathes of territory.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday accused Washington of trying to regain control of the country it once occupied — a charge Kerry denied, saying the United States was committed to helping Iraq but wanted a more inclusive government.

Kerry would "discuss US actions underway to assist Iraq as it confronts this threat and urge Iraqi leaders to move forward as quickly as possible with its government formation process to forge a government that represents the interests of Iraqis," state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

If they capture Kerry, we don’t want him back.

Think of the possibilities.

You mean like justice for our much-maligned troops who served in Viet Nam?

I would cheer...

No, I was just thinking of all the violence there now and how dangerous it is.

If I could say what I really think about the many possibilities of that situation... I could be arrested. :)

Just imagine the Liberals reaction if ANOTHER us Ambassador (so to speak) came to harm over there.

To put this in perspective it’s like insisting the French form a more inclusive government as the Nazis drove toward Paris.

Which is exactly what they did.

This is classic liberal insanity and game playing to blame the Iraqis for being attacked.

Think of the possibilities.

I did, and I was very disappointed to discover he 'landed' with the assistance of a plane.

-——to form a more inclusive government -—

Lurch is attempting to close the barn door after the horses have all escaped.

I’ve seen nothing to show that the Sunni MP’s want to reunify or even serve in the now defunct Iraqi government

If anything, they will be welcome to serve the new ISSL government in some capacity

Over the years Lurch has been growing the long face for just such an event as total failure.

I am sure he will use his silver-tongued skills to explain to them why war is bad and they should all sit around a table and sing Kumbaya and live in peace and harmony. His naively optimistic view of the world unrest worked well in VietNam also.

Perhaps he’ll simply explain to them that if the implement same-sex marriage and abortion on demand all their woes will go away.

What if he is captured by ISIS? Will Obama wait 444 days to send a rescue mission in during sand storm season?

In a perfect world we’d never hear from him again. You know this guy does not want to go there. Who would want to go talk to those people with no chance to be successful? Obammy sent him there so it would look like we were doing something. Its all for show.

If anyone doubted Kerry's incompetence, this is instructive. The government, such as it is, is under armed assault, much of the country in insurgent hands, and Kerry demands they include the enemy in the government. Brilliant. But then, come to think of it, he took the same tack during the war in Vietnam.
